How do I setup an HP Deskjet 4580 wireless printer?

I have an HP Deskjet 4580 wireless printer.  I can get it to work with the usb cable just fine.  I tried running the printer setup wizard and it doesn't see the printer wirelessly.   Has anyone figured out how to make it work?

I don't have a broad band modem type internet connection, use a 3G usb dongle, and can't set up the router in Windows either.  It won't recognise my internet connection.

Hi,

you should be able to configure your printer like any other network printer, the fact is wireless instead of a cable shouldn't matter, then in printerdrake
choose Add Printer -> Next -> Network printer, and mark "printer auto-detection"; printerdrake should find your printer.

Of course, you need to verify that some reasonable IP address is assigned to your printer, may be statically, may be from DHCP.
If it's automatically assigned from DHCP (i.e. from your wireless access point), you should take care that the address assigned to the printer will always be the same.

You can eventually verify the IP address assigned to the printer using the command: hp-probe -bnet

what is the IP address you have set up in printerdrake ?
what is the IP address you eventually set up on the printer ?

please clarify the step you have done, otherwise it's not possible to understand much of the issue.

From reading on the HP website, it looks like the only way to use the printer wirelessly is through a wireless router.  So, it looks like I'm shot down on using it wirelessly.

Your printer can use the ad-hoc mode (peer-to-peer)  http://h20563.www2.hp.com/p_wireless/faq.html#5a
therefore you should be able to setup the printer without the need of a wireless router.

I bought a HP recently which did not have the set up available on its panel.

I had to set it up using Win software supplied with it.

After the IP address and other setting were in the printer I have had no bother connecting to it using Linux.

Did that model come with similar Win software?

The printer did come with a software disk for windows.  I no longer have that disk available.

also if you must have a wireless router, the prices have fallen incredibly, the right one for you could cost $50

I've tried all the links posted for HP and the info.  All I get is page not found. Tried searching on the HP website and all I find is stuff for Windows.

I bought a router, but that was no cigar either.  My ethernet adapter doesn't work (whole nother mess of worms) so I can't set it up to connect through the router either.

wasn't you asking for the windows apps?  the driver and apps cd?
