Totally empty kmix page [SOLVED]
« on: March 13, 2011, 02:29:26 PM »
Trying to set myself up for skype, I set myself up for failure! After my test call did not work (did not hear my voice) I played around with the kmix sliders and must have pushed some wrong button combination which left me with a totally clean sheet of kmix, i.e. just 2 mini icons on the top left (like the loudspeaker icon, kmix in the center, and the three resizing icons on the right).
The kmix icon did not show anything I could do to regain the sliders. I checked the board for many similar problems (I have NVIDIA) but no solutions there to fix my problem. Even completely removing and reinstalling kmix did nothing to my blank page. Does anyone have a suggestion? I have no sound whatsoever :(  I hate to do that to myself! The system has been working perfectly for months, as do all the others.

edit: I installed pulseaudio and have sound back but still an empty kmix page(??)

Have you rerun alsaconf as root?

Thank you OP, did as you requested and the command did its thing, playing Schubert right now, but the sliders are not back. Maybe I should reboot?

edit: no change after reboot

In kmix --> Settings --> Configure Channels can you move the various channels from the left pane to the right pane? Right pane are the ones that will show.

That seems to be my problem: I click on kmix in the menu but that confronts me with that blank page where I can't get to settings and/or channel confgiuration. I know what it's supposed to look like, just having downloaded the kmix manual. But I can't get there from here.

I just confirmed with my three other computers running KDE 4.5....  They are all allowing me to access settings as suggested by OP. This one does not  -  there is no settings option available for this blank page. What I can't understand is why totally removing and reinstalling would not fix the problem?  Any other takers?

I also have this problem. Nothing in Kmix window except the menu. Alsamixer and GnomeAlsaMixer are showing all the missed sliders. I kind of miss the function of Fn buttons. Volume up/down/mute etc. It has worked with Kmix.

Out of curiosity,

Log in as root and see if the controls show up.  If they do then there's a problem with with the user account profile.  Look in the .kde4/share/apps/kmix/profiles/ xml file to see if it's populated.

Never had this problem.

Thank you qwiklaser5100a for pointing me out...  ::)

I always suggest others to try out things on another account before do any steps and keep forgetting when it's my case.
The trick was to copy kmixctrlrc and kmixrc located in ~/.kde4/share/config from another account and replace mine.

I hope this will work for ebvt too.

Thanx, had the same issue on my ASUS P5N-E SLI with KDE 4.6.1 and pulseaudio installed.

Empty kmix  >:(

Message -> kmix cannot add view - guiprofile is invalid

deleting ~/.kde4/share/config/kmixrc did it with me!

Just discovered that there was more activity about this question of mine. Thanks all for responding!
I'll try that out later today when I use that desktop and report back then.

Wiped out kmixrc and bingo! Thanks everyone for your inputs. The only question that remains: why am I not Linuxsavvy enough to think of it myself :(?

Thanks again,

Kmix again empty!

deleting ~/.kde4/share/config/kmixrc seems only to be a momentary solution...
