single click

I set my mouse for single click but it won't open desktop applications without double click, and I have to double click repeatedly to open them.

Retired.  Where, exactly did you go to set the single click mode?  There are a couple of ways to do this in XFCE. 

Also, are you using XFCE 4.6 or 4.8?

Duh - just re-read your post.  You cannot single click desktop icons without modifying GTK itself.

GermanTux is correct ... the settings you are adjusting are for Thunar file manager and how the mouse click is controlled in that application ... it would need a patch for GTK ...
