Just making light of the situation, Mark. Ain't our experts just so knowledgeable? I'd like to add in my comparison results but I'm sure yours will be quite different. It's best to decide on what you can make out of what everyone had posted... but do remember to backup! ;D

Buuuuutttt...if I install the new kernel, what difference am I going to see?  I mean, why a new kernel?  Better Hardware support?

It gives you the right to proclaim yourself "A REAL MAN" ... "I run the latest and greatest Linux kernel" ... (don't know why, but it sure sounds manly and geeky, at the same time;D ;D ;D
I like that one old-polack. In a world of all women. That is my wife, my two daughters, my two grand-daughters, a man needs a Real-Man kernel just to feel like a man. I am going to go ask my wife if I can install it right now.

Married "Real Men" always ask their wives permission... because it's polite, and to insure that when they wake up in the morning, all their "Real Manly" parts are still properly connected. ;)

Okay okay okay okay.  I'm gonna wait until the other drivers arrive for this core i3 processor.

I called Lenovo and asked it if was possible to simply buy an ATI card and plug it in.  They said, "Nope."

So, rather than install this kernel that may not do much by itself, I'll wait for the other things.

The question is, what doesn't work on this notebook?  Well, everything works except desktop effects. And sound is unable to be shared.   For instance, when I have Clementine open and playing a song, launching Pysol solitaire (which requires sound effects), well, Pysol doesn't launch.  If I start Pysol first and try to play a song on Clementine, no sound from Clementine.

Other than that, things work and work well.

Are you sure you are using the Alsa sound system?

If not, that might explain the sound problems.

I think so.  Not sure.  I'm gonna check that tonight.  I'm not in front of the notebook ATM.  This is done in phonon via control panel, correct?

Just checked PCC.

Quote
Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (Intel Corporation|5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio).

Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

I tried enable user switching and it won't take.

I did some searching here in the forums and stumbled on a discussion regarding PulseAudio. I disabled it in PC and now sound works while multiple programs run. well, at least two...running Clementine and Pysol. Playing a song and Pysol running and playing all sound effects.

What is PulseAudio anyhow?  I'll do a search now.
