Mouse pointer blanks when hovering over clickable items
« on: September 16, 2011, 01:45:52 AM »
This I think will be a problem when my wife starts using the laptop. The mouse pointer will disappear when it moves onto something which can be clicked on, most noticeable in Firefox when you place it on a link but it also happens in the file manager and others. This behavior is really a bit confusing for a novice PC user, true a slight movement of the mouse brings it back but I really dont want it to do this at all. It does not matter whether I am using the Glidepoint or the external USB mouse so I dont thing it is related to the tacking device itself but is a generic thing.

I dont see this behavior on my PCLinuxOS desktop PC.

Can this be changed so it does not blank at all?

I had the same issue recently.
To be more precise it disappeared when hovering over an active area where a help-hint would appear near the pointer.

I just changed the cursor theme (Configure Your LXDesktop) and glitch is gone.

Do you remember which one caused the problem? Seems to me that more than one has it, Aero and Wonderland both exhibit the problem so far.

Perhaps someone could explain why. I'd prefer a black mouse cursor but only the red and white ones do not exhibit this behavior.

I'm using the Crystal cursor theme. It comes in several colors and animated and non-animated. I've not had the problem described.

Yes, just checked, they do the same here.

I think I was on Aero.
The other three themes installed here don't show this behaviour.
They are handhelds, redglass and whiteglass.

I dont seem to have that one available, I'll have a look to see what I can add.

It's in the repos. In Synaptic search, use the term "cursor" to get a list of available themes.

Yes I've done that.

I find it strange that I have two users defined on my LXDE system, mine and my wife's. I find that the same cursor theme selected on both seems to behave differently! The Crystal one does seem to exhibit the same behavior on my login where the mouse pointer disappears when a pop-up appears. I expected all mouse themes to behave like they do on full KDE and still be there whether or not there is a popup or click-able button or link. So far I've only found one on my wife's login which works as I expect

It is very confusing for someone who basically does not like computers and uses them because' that's the way we are going now' but expects the same behavior as Windows, a mouse pointer should be there whatever it is hovered over. Certainly my full KDE system does this and I expected LXDE to be the same. However on this old laptop running a full KDE system is a no go.

I see no reason for the pointer to disappear and I'd expected all cursor themes to behave the same way.

Stuart,
LXDE is not KDE. Expecting it to be the same as KDE will only result in frustrated expectations. The two are entirely different Desktop Environments.

While I understand that I do think that normal things like mouse behaviour should be the same. I dont see why basics like this should very so different especially when some mouse themes work (in my view) as they should and others dont. I also dont see why two users on the same system should see different behaviour on the same theme. I certainly do not expect KDE and LXDE to be the same in functionality but the basics of mouse cursor should be the same.

I have found a theme which works on my wife's login, it's not ideal as the colour is not the best considering the background she insist on having but it works.
