<SOLVED> WINE does not play nice in LXDE
« on: March 07, 2011, 02:53:59 PM »
Have always used WINE in Linux to play several of the olde timey card games from Windows - Solitaire, Hearts, etc.  Never had a problem with any distro or desktop combinations until now.  Whenever cards are moved a black streak is left which obliterates everything, making the games almost unusable and very annoying.  Anyone know what might be causing this?

It looks like a graphic card/driver issue. Maybe. Can you give some more information about your system? Mobo, processor, RAM and video.

Would you still think this if you knew it doesn't happen in LXDE releases of other distros?

Yes. I would. This doesn't appear to be an issue of which DE is in use.

We do not discuss other distros.

ATI video, eh? Are you using the proprietary driver?

I run games perfectly in LXDE (in fact I recommend it because it frees more resources for the game) but Radeon video cards use to be a problem.

I have no ATI Radeon cards to test. On a search of the forum, I found --

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,74702.0.html

plus many others. I used the search term Radeon.

Any road, there should be at least 2 drivers available for that card (I think). Try the other driver.

I think you may have missed the point that these are Windows games running via WINE, not Linux games running in Linux.

Thanks for the info.

Only see one driver, the one I stated earlier.  The fglrx driver does not work.  Not sure if this what you meant by "... the other driver..."

I did download the latest drive, ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run, from the AMD website.  They state this is the last driver published that will support the 9600.

Got up this morning and the problem seems to have gone away, at least for now.  Strange.  Will keep your suggestions in mind if it crops back up. For now I will just continue to monitor.  If it ain't broken, don't fix it!

What is "DE"?

Who was discussing other distros.  Only made an observation of fact.

I agree..i have the same video card as the OP and have noticed stuttering with several online video sites which never used to happen with the radeon driver that came with the older pclos2007.The way i solved it in the current pclos was to add the line (without the quotes) "option DRI   False" into the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file under the device section:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "device1"
    VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName "ATI Radeon X1950 and earlier"
    Driver "ati"
    Option "DPMS"
    Option "DRI" "False"
EndSection

It's worth giving it a shot and see how it goes.

Adding the Option "DRI" "False"   line seems to have fixed my problem.
