How can I use nm-applet to manage the network?
« on: March 06, 2011, 03:34:52 PM »
When I try to start nm-applet, I got these:

Quote
# nm-applet --sm-disable
libnotify-Message: Unable to get session bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

(nm-applet:4641): libnotify-CRITICAL **: notify_get_server_caps: assertion `proxy != NULL' failed

** (nm-applet:4641): WARNING **: <WARN>  bus_init(): Could not get the session bus.  Make sure the message bus daemon is running!  Message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

**
GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Aborted

I so want to use nm-applet to create an ad-hoc network for internet sharing. Due to previous experience with other distros, it is the most effective way to do that.

With the default networkmanager in PCLinuxOS, I have tried everything but never succeeded. I even tried wicd, it was able to create an ad-hoc network, but not to connect to.

Any suggestions?Thanks!

I've been trying to do the same thing with no success.  I can connect to an access point wirelessly, but have never been able to connect to another computer with an ad-hoc connection.   I was able to do it all with Mint, but never have been able to do it with PCLOS.

Hi Capt Turk, if you managed to start nm-applet, then you might want to have a look at my other post:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,88443.0.html

Now I have managed to disable the default net_applet to autostart as the system starts up. But I still have to start nm-applet manually.

And one more thing, with the newest kernel 2.6.37 there are a lot of problems with the network and other stuff such as haldaemon or LCD brightness, so I suggest to stick to the older kernel 2.6.33. In my laptop everything works fine with it.

I strongly disagree with the above statement.  I'm running this kernel onto 2 laptop without any problem,  I didn't see a single post on this forum reporting problem related
to haldaemon in combination with 2.6.37 kernel, I'm quite confident that several users are successfully running 2.6.37 kernel, I see that in their posts.

It was also clear from a your previous threads that the LCD brightness was a specific problem of your SAMSUNG R519, the haldaemon problem (from another thread)
was  a problem  related to yours messed up services, thread now deleted. Don't know about the supposed network problems.

Although you can have had problems, that doesn't mean that all installation are affected by the same problems.

Yesterday I installed kernel 2.6.37.4, and the haldaemon problem happened again...no keyboard and mouse when logged into desktop...
I was very worried that I have to re-install the whole system all over again. Luckily I restarted and chose the 2.6.33 kernel, now everything works fine again. I tried the two kernels many times in the last 24 hours and the new kernel definitely is the problem source(with this system I didn't try to install anything that's not from synaptic, have been very very careful about the software choice). Now I deleted the new kernel and is very happy with the old one. No low LCD brightness, no messed up services.

The network problem is that previously with kernel 2.6.37.2 the nm-applet cannot be started. I am not sure if it is the kernel's problem.
Anyway, the 2.6.33 kernel is working fine in my laptop without any annoying problems. These are only my experience so I made a suggestion.

I've tried all the earlier kernels too.  My ethernet adapter will not work with any of them, and wireless will only connect to an access point.  It will not connect ad-hoc to another computer with any of them.
According to the bug reports posts, this was all supposed to be fixed in 2.6.37
