« on: March 05, 2011, 04:31:52 AM »
Hi

Just installed PCLinuxOS Kde but Google Earth not working. -  I have same problem on another HD but on this one I managed to install Google Earth from outside our repository following a procedure stated somewhere in the forum. I have searched and searched again but can not find the post.

Can't help you with getting GE working within repo, apart from writing that mine worked out of the box, but I'm using Gnome (yah boo sucks to KDE, not that I've ever tried it). I do know that no one on here ever advises in favour of installing outside synaptic. (I did a manual install of Firefox and got my knuckles metaphorically rapped).
PCLinuxOS, Gnome, LXDE; AMD Dual Core Processor 4850B ‎512 KB ‎2500 MHz; Seagate 500418AS; FreeAgentDesktop external drive; PHILIPS DVDR1628P1; GeForce 6150SE nForce 430; HP Photosmart. PASS April 2012. Still learnin' Linux. If I have offended, please note: I am a professor of dontopedalogy.

Hi
Just installed PCLinuxOS Kde but Google Earth not working....

"Not working is" not much of a clue to anyone trying to help!!
Does it try to start or not even start at all or does it freeze at the Start-up Tips screen???

I too have noticed that certain programs are failing to run after I last updated my laptop.  Googleearth is one of them.

Open a console window at run 'googleearth' from it and tell use if you get any errors.

Here is what I see when I run it from my system

[dwmoar@laptop ~]$ googleearth
/usr/bin/googleearth: line 4: /usr/lib/googleearth/googleearth-bin: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/googleearth: line 4: /usr/lib/googleearth/googleearth-bin: Success

I went to synaptic to reload it and it wasn't an option (grayed out) so I removed and reinstalled it, and low and behold it is working fine now.

I am using KDE with 2010.12 and was able to get Google Earth working perfectly well by downloading from Synaptic. I have made the decision that, with this latest version of PCLinuxOS, I will install nothing from outside the repositories. If it ain't in the repositories, I will wait for it to appear, or do without.

No problem with the repo version on my fully updated 4.6.1. GoogleEarth was installed before the upgrade.

Yes that's the common way to disable Start-up Tips screen (which is where GE usually freezes at) but another way is to temporarily disconnect from the internet, start GE and accept the GE warning boxes that tell you that there is no connection to the internet by clicking their OK buttons. GE will start without the Start-up Tips screen. Go to GE Tools>Options>General>uncheck Start up Tips>Apply>OK and exit!
Reconnect to the internet and all will be next time you start GE!
