<SOLVED> New Vbox extpack How to install
« on: March 03, 2011, 02:54:49 PM »
I was delighted to find that we now have getvirtualbox for ver. 4.04 in the repositories and that it gives you the option to either install or not in it's dialog box.  However even though the install for Virtual Box is straight forward, I found that the installation of the new extpack problimatic. >:(

Oracle says that all you have to do is double click on the downloaded file and then follow the directions.  I did not find this to be the case.  I had to read through several pages of their documentaion to find the command to install it from the command line.  Shouldn't this be easier?

I think new users will be baffled so here is the command I found:

VBoxManage extpack install <name of extpack without brackets>

Oracle's doc's say that the install of the extpack is not a problem for experience linux installers.

What about those of us who don't install everyday or are fairly new? >:(

It took entirely too long for me to get this done, and I've worked with several different distro's for several years. ???

For those who don't yet know the procedure:

In the main VBox window choose

File > Preferences > Extensions - on the r/hand side you can Add  Packages.

go to where your Ext Pack is located and install - that's it.

Edit - the download link is below:

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Look for where it says: VirtualBox 4.0.4 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack All Platforms

Where was that when I installed????  Now they make it too easy.  That's probably why I missed it.  And in my own defense, I did look in the preferences menu.  Can you call that a defense??? ;D ;D ;D
