real time kernel patch
« on: March 03, 2011, 08:03:32 AM »
Hi guys, just wondering if someone has any experience with compiling rt kernel for musicians?

i would really like to use it with my music gear :)

I'm a complete noob with kernel patching so i wouldn't dare to try it...

Since they are still making a patch, there is probably some advantage, but much of the realtime work has already been integrated into the kernel. Is there something specific that you are trying to do, that the stock kernel or the bfs kernel has too much latency?

Well, personally i didn't had any problems :| but i saw all music production dedicated distros are using it

But, like i said, i\m new to all this, maybe there is no need for the patch anymore.

Thou i have an pretty good gear/comp, so maybe things are different on slower machines.

Maybe someone has more info on this.

Is rt patch obsolete?

Is rt patch obsolete?

If it were completely obsolete, I don't think they would continue to create patches. But, I have read that for most uses, the realtime features of the standard kernel work really well now. I don't have any time for music production right now, so I can't confirm. I believe Tex's kernel build script has a rt option in the script, but no patches. It may be really easy, (ha!), to add in the current patches and build. I don't have the time to do it, unfortunately.
