<Fixed>Printer Ethernet Connection (CUPs Help?)
« on: March 02, 2011, 08:34:48 PM »
I have a Samsung printer with an Ethernet port. A quick look at the manual says I need to buy a print server to use it. So just to be sure I understand there is no way to connect this without a server? I was hoping I could hook it directly to the router but that won't work, correct? Samsung ML-2571N

IIRC, CUPS will work as your print server, so yes, you should be able to hook it to your router.

Hopefully, those with a greater understanding of CUPS will be along shortly.

Thank you. I have looked in cups and I think I can find the basics but what info I need on the printer to set it up or how to get that info I don't know. Tried reading Cups help but it wasn't clear to me.

In the past, you could do all the setup in PCC (printerdrake?) and everything just worked.  But sometime after KDE 4, it became seriously broken.

I have piddled around in cups trying to connect to my Brother HL-5170 (plugged into the router), without much success.  It worked at one time, as did my Kodak EasyShare Photo printer when plugged into a USB port.  Alas, no longer.

If it doesn't straighten out with a fresh install (maybe next week), I'll be right here with you, asking for help.

First a correction. The manual does say mine does not need a print server. That's apparently what the "N" means at the end of my model number. I was looking at the one with no N.

Reading the manual it seems I can probably do it using the Samsung Linux driver. It has an interface for doing that. I read it quickly though not planing on going of reservation for software so I may be wrong. If no one can tell me how in CUPs then I might try in a throw away instal of PCLOS.

And if someone is wondering, yes, this is the same printer that the USB connection is no longer detected on. Since I wasn't getting anywhere there I thought I'd try Ethernet. Been a couple of years since I tried parallel and the computer failed to detect it but if this fails maybe I'll try that again before giving up.

CUPS already installed ?
You already setup the printer on USB ?
Or from PCC try to setup manualy on the parallel port.
After setup change the port to a networkport and fill in the TCP/IP adress.

I am going to go somewhere and quietly bang my head against the wall for half an hour. A few months ago after a day of trying to set this up on LP1 and failing I gave up so I didn't even try parallel this time when USB was no longer seen. You can not imagine my surprise when in desperation I again tried parallel and it was automatically set up. Geeze and words not allowed in the forum. Thanks all for your replies.
