once you have the new sources applied, either here or here, and have successfully updated your system you should then start Synaptic and search for and install lomanager. Then you close Synaptic, run lomanager, and follow the instructions.

Is there a glossary of terms used in Linux because it really is a 'new language' to new users and those kind souls that are attempting to help me are I am sad to say falling short in some of the instructions as to what to do, where to find stuff and where and how to install stuff !

Hey and I am not thick, I am just a normal average Joe

Hey Pinoc

You are the closest to helping me so how do I do this, from the link you provided ? Then I might get going better.

"You will need to download then copy the above file as root to your /etc/apt folder."

Hi nalareddep,

in my previous post I provided several links which you should have read and followed but you did not say anything about that. How can we help you if you don't reply to what we say?

Now, first we need to get your system uptodate. I have added a third option in this thread. Please follow the steps outlined in Option 3 there. After you have done that you start PCMenu -> Software Center -> Synaptic Package Manager, then press the Search button, and search for lomanager. If the box in Syanptic next to lomanager is empty then you double-click on lomanager to mark it for installation (see also Synaptic -> Help -> Icon legend), then press on Apply to install it.
There is also some manual somewhere but let's first see how it works like this.
good luck,
-p.

OK thanks for your patience with me.

I have done this (option 3) and I seemed to have loaded some files when I copied and pasted the instruction as directed and pressed enter.  Also the Reload button works in the Synaptic window and loads 7 of 11 files but a "could not download all repository indexes" box also appears.  However when I try to download lomanager nothing appears and I cannot see it in the list.

nalareddep.
here lomanager is in "Office" and "Software Center" Menu sections under the name "LibreOffice Manager".

If you don't find it there try to run it in Terminal by the command
lomanager <Enter>
.

Post here what happens, please.

either your sources.list still is not working correctly or your Internet connection is flaky. Try again to download the getnewsources from option 3, the version I uploaded today is a bit different. Please read and follow exactly the instructions of option 3. Then follow the steps from my previous post to install lomanager through Synaptic, and finally run it.

OK the story so far......................Option 3

I download the file  - root/home/alan/getnewsources

I paste chmod u+x getnewsources; ./getnewsources to the konsole and below is the error message I then get.

[alan@localhost ~]$ chmod u+x getnewsources; ./getnewsources
/bin/rm: cannot remove `inet.log': Operation not permitted

I then get a dialogue box telling me

Problem accessing the Internet! You have either:
 a) no Internet connection, too bad :-(, or
 b) you use a proxy sever, or
 c) you have a dns-lookup error.

I then :

c) Configure your Internet to use OpenDNS: and disconnect and reconnect as instructed

Having done this I try again with the same error as above

any further advice appreciated.

Hi nalareddep,

1) seems you ran getnewsources before as root? As root delete the file /tmp/inet.log
2) next getnewsources says you have no Internet because it could not access google. This could be a DNS-issue which usualli is resolved by using OpenDNS as indicated, but apparently this didn't help either. Did you successfully download the file getnewsources on the same PC where getnewsources complains about the missing Internet? I assume that despite of all these messages you do have a working Internet connection. If so then
3) as an alternative option you can try to download lomanager rpm-file and in case you already have java and some other dependencies installed you could then install lomanager by having Synaptic closed, opening a terminal in the directory where you downloaded the package and copy/paste:
Code: [Select]
apt-get install lomanager-3.3.1-2pclos2011.i586.rpm and in case it could be installed you can then run it form the menu entry. However, as long as point 2 above is not resolved, lomanager will give you the very same error message and in addition you can not use Synaptic for the same reason. What puzzles me is that in a previous post Synaptic downloaded some repo-sections, so your Internet connection seemed to work.
Anyway, please ensure to have a reliable and working Internet connection on the PC of question.
good luck,
-p.
