Settings do not stay in Astronomy Edition.
« on: February 28, 2011, 12:18:07 PM »
I have installed Gsynaptics because I am having a problem with the tapping function of my Synaptics touchpad while typing.  I went into Gsynaptics and turned off "tapping".  Did a reboot and "tapping" is enabled.

Also I go to a public library to use the wifi.  I have clicked on "mute" in the volume settings icon in the taskbar.  Same here, after a reboot audio is un-muted.

Hi,

Gsynaptics - I have no knowledge on this as I don't use a laptop.  However, searching "Gsynaptics turn tapping off" in Google turns up quite a few forums where this is an issue.  Browse through - the answer will be in there somewhere.

Unfortunately I can't replicate your issue with the mute button, although I am doing it in VBox.  Maybe there is a hardware issue.  Have you tried just sliding the volume down to minimum?

Yes I have tried sliding the volume slider to minimum and after a reboot it is back at max volume un-muted.
Also the settings do not stay with Gnome ALSA Mixer.  To have audio, I must open Gnome ALSA Mixer and adjust the slider labeled "front".  But after a reboot the slider is at minimum.

Hi,

Try this : set up alsamixer in a root console, and once done invoke in the same root console "alsactl store". Then try again.

I have opened gnome-alsamixer from a root terminal and configured it.  Then when I tried "alsactl store" I get:

[root@localhost robert]# alsactl store
bash: alsactl: command not found
[root@localhost robert]#

Hi,

Code: [Select]
# rpm -qf /usr/sbin/alsactl
alsa-utils-1.0.23-1pclos2010

install alsa-utils.

Taco22, maybe should you add alsa-utils to your version. :)

It has to be done just after you setup or check the setup with alsamixer (or any mixer of your choice, but alsamixer can be started as root in console)

Yes that is exactly what I did.  Opened a Root Terminal launched gnome-alsamixer from the terminal, then issued the  "alsactl store" in the root terminal.

Did a reboot and the settings stayed.

Now if I can only get the settings to stay in gsynaptics....
Every time I boot the laptop I must open gsynaptics and disable "tapping" because every time I am typing an email or on a forum the synaptics touchpad is clicking on where ever the cursor is.

Good, but you should avoid starting a gui application from a root terminal. The right way to do it is to start it from user terminal with gksu (for some security reasons, because some gui apps may contain security issues, and... gksu is there to provide the window that prompts for the root password, and is meant for this use).

What about trying to configure it with "gksu gsynaptic" ?

Well, I should try... I have just plugged in a good Logitech Ultra-Flat USB keyboard to my laptop, and a good mouse too, and I'm fine with that setting. ^^

Yes this works in a user terminal, it will ask for my "root" password, but the settings do not stay.

Hi,

Would you try to check how old is our gsynaptic package, just incase ? Type in a console _as simple user is ok_, "rpm -qil gsynaptic" (works if the package is installed) and there seek for the source of the package, copy/paste the url to your browser and compare the latest stable version with what we have.

Thanks.

[robert@localhost ~]$ rpm -qil gsynaptic
package gsynaptic is not installed
[robert@localhost ~]$

Interesting because I have opened it and turned off tapping.

[robert@localhost ~]$ gksu gsynaptics

** (gsynaptics:3642): WARNING **: Using synclient
[robert@localhost ~]$

And the gui of gsynaptics opens.

The shell commands don't suffer mistakes in the spelling. ;-)

Ok I shall take the blame for that   Even though I copied and pasted what was written :o   ;D ;D

Name        : gsynaptics                   Relocations: (not relocatable)
Version     : 0.9.16                            Vendor: (none)
Release     : 1pclos2010                    Build Date: Tue 16 Feb 2010 07:16:16 AM CST
Install Date: Mon 21 Feb 2011 11:53:10 PM CST      Build Host: localhost.localdomain
Group       : System/Configuration/Hardware   Source RPM: gsynaptics-0.9.16-1pclos2010.src.rpm
Size        : 163289                           License: GPLv2+

And according to their website:

GSynaptics will be obsolete. Please try GPointing Device Settings.

So I have uninstalled gsynaptics and installed gpointing-device-settings
