Install guest o/s directly from iso [SOLVED]
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:49:11 AM »
I am learning how to use virtualbox having just installed it (getvirtualbox from synaptic) but want to know if I can install a guest o/s directly from an iso without having to burn a CD first. I have read the pdf file that comes with virtualbox but could find this answer. Instructions on how to do this if it is possible would be appreciated. I have managed to install Vista from a DVD so I understand how that works.

If a CD must be used then can this be a CD-R/W?

Just a noobs info - it is possible as far as I remember the last VM install here was the Lenny Incognto directly from the .iso file on the hard disk. Someone of the guys told me to do and I did it.
It was very simple but I can't remember the details now :-\

In VirtualBox, open the Media Manager
>File >Virtual Media Manager

Click on the CD/DVD Images tab

Click ADD

Find your .iso image and click Open

Assign that .iso image as the CD/DVD when creating/modifying a VM...

It is extremely easy to install a Guest OS directly from a .iso file in Virtualbox. The first time you start up your Virtual Machine(VM), a wizard will pop up asking you to choose a .iso file to boot from. If you did not/forgot to choose  a .iso file from that dialog, then you should either go to the settings of the VM and go to Storage, and for the IDE secondary master choose your CD/DVD image, or upon booting up your VM, go to Devices > CD/DVD devices. Once you're done installing, go to Devices > CD/DVD Images > Unmount CD/DVD Device.

Or you could just follow pags's advice. ;) ;D
