Hi,

No joy on either Kino or Kdenlive. There's no AV/C device to choose at Kino -> Edit -> Preferences -> IEEE1394. So does that mean that the Firewire is not getting through?

Also tried to modprobe dv1394, checked the device node permission, and still stuck.

Sad to say...

Code: [Select]
[archie@arevalo ~]$ dvgrab
Error: no camera exists

I'm beginning to believe something is wrong with the Firewire. How about the USB interface?

the usb interface is only for the pictures you take to the sd card

if the camera is capable of record video to sd card it will be low quality video and it will work as a usb mass sotrage device so you can access the images and videos using any file browser

the dv video stored in the minidv cassette only comes out of the camera using firewire or if you have a minidv drive on the pc(so uncommon, practically nonexistent)

i am having problems to capture too, camera is detected but no app does a thing when i ask to do something

in windows xp video is detected and i can capture with windows movie maker

Oh gawd... just yesterday, I deleted the last remnant of Windows ... on VirtualBox. But I don't suppose that'll do for me either if the camcorder isn't detected on PCLOS.  :(

virtualbox has no access to firewire, only to usb if you have the usb version

this is one of the reasons my machines dualboot with xp  ;)

Of course, apparently your firewire camcorder is not recognized. Do you have a chance to try another/different firewire cable ?
what about dmesg output ? eventually try dmesg | grep -i ieee1394

Great! So there's still no reason for me to reinstall XP again on VirtualBox.

Tomorrow, I'll call and see if any of my friends have a similar Firewire cable, and I'll post back. If not, I'll resort to using the digital camera's video recording function. That's easier with the SD card. I was really hoping I could get this device to work on my VAIO. I used to plug that device in on a desktop with an ATI TVOut video card. Too bad, that desktop had gone into retirement.

Code: [Select]
[archie@arevalo ~]$ dmesg | grep -i ieee1394
ieee1394: raw1394: /dev/raw1394 device initialized
ieee1394: Host added: ID:BUS[0-00:1023]  GUID[080046030277e51c]

In the meantime, thanks to all your help, guys. If you think of anything to get this going, just let me know. Cheers.

Archie.

Have you tried playing the stream with VLC?

If it plays it  you can record what is played from within VLC.

VLC - Media - Open Capture Device -  ......  and enter the /dev/?? where required .....

Nope. But it looks even more complicated ... guessing the capture mode and filling in the blanks. I tried the three capture modes and tried the two device nodes discussed - /dev/raw1394 and /dev/dv1394-0. No joy.  :(

At this point, my concern is the Firewire. It needs to send an SOS to the VAIO.

Cheers.
