Need help with capturing video from a JVC camcorder
« on: February 25, 2011, 11:47:14 PM »
Hi.

I have a fully updated KDE and I would like to transfer video clips from an old JVC GR-D290 Mini DV Camcorder into my computer so I can edit it with Kino. I thought it would be as simple as plugin the cables, fire up Kino and play the clip so it could be captured. Not the simplicity that I expected and I thought OK.

$ lsusb -v had a long list of descriptors and from what I can gather, it looked like everything is in order. Anyone wishing to take a look at the output of $ lsusb -v, I have saved it at (sorry!) http://www.4shared.com/file/BWo_HRSW/jvc.html

I opened drakconf (PCC/Configure My Computer) > Hardware > Browse and configure hardware. OK. It's listed under Webcam as:

Code: [Select]
Identification
Vendor: ‎JVC
Description: ‎GR-D290
Media class: ‎Video|Video Control
Connection
Bus: ‎USB
Bus PCI #: ‎2
PCI device #: ‎7
Vendor ID: ‎0x04f1
Device ID: ‎0x000d
Misc
Module: ‎uvcvideo

Anyone who has done something similar, kindly share your knowledge. Or if you can assist me in setting up all the necessary stuff, I would greatly appreciate your kindness.

My purpose is to fulfil my word to jaydot. I haven't done videos for a long time and I am really rusty.  :)

Hi Archie,
I have seen also your other post http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,69752.msg731056.html#msg731056
at this time it's not clear to me if you are going to use the USB interface or the FIREWIRE (ieee1394) interface of your camcorder. You should really clarify this point.

Hey AS and coffeetime,

Thank you for your replies. Either way is good with me. The problem or problems are neither the USB interface or the IEEE doesn't do much for me at this point. I have nothing to capture. I have also installed dvgrab and Kdenlive, which btw is more sophisticated than kino but I can manage that app, and also doesn't connect through the Firewire.

It should also be noted that in Kino, one of the errors was "... unable to read/write /dev/raw1394" so I think that is a good place than any to start.

Any ideas?

Archie

As you can see, I have neither the modules raw1394 nor ieee1394 loaded and when modprobe these aren't found either.

Perhaps a change of kernel? Could it be that these modules weren't in the patch?

OK. We're getting somewhere.

Code: [Select]
[archie@arevalo ~]$ uname -r && lsmod | grep 1394
2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs
raw1394                16911  0

ieee1394               69727  3 raw1394,ohci1394,sbp2

However, I am still unable to connect on Kdenlive and Kino reports No AV/C compliant cam connected or not switched on?

How else can I check whether the Firewire is good? I haven't used it for over a year and the last time, it was good but that was on my desktop now long gone. Just using the VAIO VGN FZ-25 for everything.

as seen in other thread, there can be a permission problem: try ls -l /dev/raw1394
if you find someting like:
Quote
crw------- 1 root root 171, 0 Feb 26 10:44 /dev/raw1394
try: chmod 666 /dev/raw1394 and retry Kino and/or Kdenlive, without restarting the PC, chmod actually don't survive upon reboot.

It's not the permission.

Code: [Select]
[archie@arevalo ~]$ ls -l /dev/raw1394
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 171, 0 Feb 26 20:57 /dev/raw1394

What else could it be?

Hi,

Try to look in Kino -> Edit -> Preferences -> IEEE1394 for correct device name. Additionally look like you can capture only when camcorder is reproducing video.
Try also modprobe dv1394, this lead to a new device named /dev/dv1394-0, test Kino using this second device and of course check
permissions of /dev/dv1394-0.
