[solved] how to add drives? VirtualBox
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:05:11 PM »
I added a mounted drive as a shared folder in my VirtualBox of XP, but I cant find it once im in there.
Then i looked at the "machine folders" entry and it says some crazy stuff some odd command to use
"net use x: \\vboxsvr\path

so i typed in "net use x: \\vboxsvr\media\Storage" in the command prompt
where my drive is mounted but i got
Error 67
Network name cannot be found.

Hi. I've done this before but I'm no longer using XP even on VirtualBox. Did you enable the shared folder on the guest settings? Have you tried to click Network Neighborhood (or something similar) on the guest VM (XP)? I remember that access to shared folders was really easy to do.

Good luck. I hope you can sort this out.

i still havent figured this out, I installed virtualbox and guest additions but i didnt use GetVirtualBox since I didnt know it existed.
Do i have to use the script to make it work?
To save my Virtual Machine do i just copy the .vdi file of my guest?

to share a directory between host and guest, you need to configure Settings -> Shared Folders , here you will find 2 names:
a share name, i.e. "MyLinuxFolder" and a path, i.e. /media/Storage.
Your folder is know as "/media/storage" in your host installation, and as \\vboxsvr\MyLinuxFolder by your guest OS.

You can browse your shared folder in guest OS  "Network neighborhood"

if i go to devices and "Install Guest Additions" it says the iso must be downloaded.
Does that mean my Guest additions aren't working right?

Hi,

No, if guest additions are installed, you can see an icon (blue cube + a start) at the left of the win XP clock.
The menu entry under "device" is only a facility always visible, before and after installation of guest additions.
if you point your mouse over the blue cube icon, you should see a "tip" describing the installed guest addition version.

If you haven't installed the Guest Additions into the VM previously they just won't be working.

I believe you have an XP Guest?  If I remember, if you had GA's installed it should show up in your XP task bar.

If you have the GA iso on your host machine try opening the Virtualbox Virtual Media Manager and load the iso in the CD/DVD section and then restart your VBox XP Machine.

If you don't have the GA iso, download it (same version as your Virtualbox) and then load it using the Virtual Media Manager mentioned above.

Once it's loaded XP will be able to install it.

For your shared folders, please follow as sound advice listed above.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Not necessarily.  As has been said, look for the blue box icon in your taskbar.  If they are not already installed, you can also download the guest additions iso directly here (version 3.2).

To access shared folders in XP, open My Computer, then type in "\\vboxsvr" - you must have the guest additions installed and working to access them properly.

Frito, if you upgrade to Virtualbox 4.0 through Synaptic (and it is still in testing, so it will not automatically upgrade) you will need to upgrade the Guest additions to Version 4 as well.  However, experience has shown that sometimes the Guest Additions still work fine even with a previous version installed, so it all depends.

Also, make sure to mark this thread as [solved] if all your questions have been answered  ;D

You are using PCLinuxOS as HOST, therefore you don't need guest addition from synaptic at all,
you would need guest addition from synaptic if your host would be XP and PCinuxOS a guest system.

In your installation, once you upgrade your Virtualbox HOST installation (Linux), you will need to update/re-install the guest addition of your GUEST machine (XP),
and XP guest additions is a windows executable, that has nothing to do with Synaptic PCLinuxOS guest additions.
