My PCLinuxOS experience has been a bit of an up and down affair. I had gravitated to MiniMe after the Full blown KDE Desktop PCLinuxOS.
I found as I have already been forced due to commitments to use Windows for my work, MiniMe could be my friendly little plaything, which indeed it is, it's captured my imagination, but looking at my notes it's been installed as MiniMe 2010.10 on 31st October 2010. The problem with Synaptic updates not working for awhile, then changing successfully to the new sources.list shouldn't have disabled my Desktop, but today it just went black, things graphicalyy went haywire, options changed mainly in the animation of objects area of my system, which I try to keep sensible with only 128 MB Graphic onboard 'chip'.
I dual boot with WinXP of all things.
Just had to Delete Minime, restore the MBR for XP, delete the Linux partitions, and here I am.
When would the next .iso , quarterly release be coming ? Seems especially with the servers synched as they are, and having to maybe do quite a large update after installing MiniMe 2010.10 it may not be wise to re-Install 2010.10, which I have in my CD -tray now, thinking will I ?
I've used PCLinuxOS for over three years, and it's always after a big update that things go wrong for me, there's extra little things to play with and although I promise myself to have a really basic install, Firefox, media player, Abiword, Arc, and not to muck around with anything prefixed, "advanced", the panel-tray thingo today went from the "wobbly Icon" look to a completely different Worded Icon arrangement in the Taskbar. I have a graphics "Chip" on my board, no NVIDIA card, and are limited to 128 MB's of graphic memory, so lean is good visually, well for the System actually.
Today I "enabled" desktop animations (?), looking for a way back to my wobbly Icon Systray, and bingo black screen, I could feel the Shutdown Icon in the darkness and luckily was able to position my mouse pointer on it and shutdown, but after a few atempts at rebooting I never regained my Desktop, just a black one, and a silver one when it was closing down.
Win XPSP3 is as usual, cos i'm an unfortunate expert after all these years, screaming along like nothing happened. I suppose it's happy to have 15 GB's back on it's system disk not that it needs it, I have a 500 GB USB External drive for backups, etc.
Yeah, a long story with a quick question: Should I not re-Install MiniMe 2010.10 now ?
1. As the big update would maybe kill the system, before it ever got going ?
2. The repos are a bit all over the place.
3. It's kind of upsetting when it breaks, is there a newer .iso of MiniMe on the way, I can't see a more recent one than one I mentioned.
I really thought I could get away with a "Minimalist system like MiniMe", you know I've noticed after an update concerning NVIDIA Driver's my graphics go haywire, third time in 18 months.
Any ideas / advice welcome.
oh, also there's a major reason for having Minime, apart from all the raving I just went on with; In Windows my Download speed is 300 Kbits/s; whereas, running Firefox in MiniMe, it is 1.2 MBytes/sec. What a difference all that Antivirus stuff does to our browsing in Windows !
Thanks for your time, I have the last .iso burnt to disk, so it's a bit tempting to go for it, maybe a wiser head can give some settling advice ?
