Update! Open Office and...ummm...Kaffeine Withdrawn! (Thnx)
« on: March 02, 2011, 05:59:15 PM »
**********
I downloaded LibreOffice from the LO site with the companion file as well.  Then, did an "rpm -Uvh ....." and it installed.  The companion file had generic menu option, a Red Hat, Mandriva and Suse rpms. I chose the generic. It installed a menu properly with no fancy icon. Then, I tried opening it and it said "No Java Runtime environment found."  I continued and it actually worked.  I rebooted and it opened properly with no "JRE warning".  The big deal was to find the icon that allows me to save as a ".pdf" file and on saving a ".doc" file to .pdf.....

It worked!

Now, on to VLC...

Thanx all!

Hi everyone -
Well, it's update time.  Got my CD through the mail and...
1. My Big Iron computer doesn't have Internet yet and I'm using Verizon 3g on a Drub XP laptop. Yuck!
2. PCLOS 2007 was sooo good to me.
3. I RILLY need whatever they're calling Open Office these days.

4. VLC is not playing my DVDs of 1980s Alabama and Oklahoma Wishbone games very well.  Sometimes barely at all - no Slo-Mo.
Can I get Kaffeine back?

That is, can I get our friendly package manager to (a),recognize my old CD for RPMs or (2), download appropriate files from the repositories and Flash Drive 'em onto my PCLOS BOX?  I miss it!

Thanks,

Charlie

Thanx for the quick reply!
Actually, no, I wasn't going to use my old CD at all.

I just really need to find a way to get O-Office onto my Mid-Tower, without having Internet access.
If I could get VLC working on my DVDs that would be fine (I got to be very good at using Kaffeine.).

You did give me a good idea though!

Back for more later,

Charlie

I may have to just break down 'n get Internet access for Big Iron.
I did get to Libre Office site and I'll still see if there are other ways to get Libre Office.
If anyone has another idea other than ol' sneaker net, lemme know.

Thanx all,

CW

to install apps without internet you need to download packages from internet and carry them to the isolated machine

there is many posts explaining how to do it, involves downloading around 5 gbs form a repo and then following some steps to create a local repository

certain apps can be downloaded from internet and installed like vlc, libreoffice between many others  but sometimes is more complicated to make them work than just find a way to put a internet connection on that machine

there is also repositories on dvd that you can buy and use, similar procedure to download all the repo and add it to synaptic
