Synaptic Upgrade doesn't work... RE-SOLVED
« on: February 23, 2011, 07:32:29 PM »
I originally posted this in a stickied thread that Texstar started, but thought I should maybe move it to a new thread.

I tried the update technique Texstar described and it worked 100% A-ok on one machine, but my home machine is different.

I am running into the following errors:

First:  After reloading in Synaptic, choosing upgrade, then apply, I get a quick (less than 1 sec) "downloading packages" message.  This turns quickly into a new popup window "applying" for about 5 seconds.  Then, I got an error message "231" something or other.  I got this 231 message about five or six times after repeating the procedure, but now I don't get the 231 message though the other messages are the same.  Nothing updates at all.  Nothing is changed.

Second:  When doing a repository speed test, I get the message:  "Unable to retrieve new sources.list file.  Verify internet connection and try again."

Anyone with any ideas to help me out??

Thanks.

D.

have you updated your sources.list file the way mentioned on the popular forum post talking about the ibiblio change?

Check here if you have the same situation.
If yes make the substitution and try Repo Speed Test again (be careful, better copy the original script to another name).
If Repo Speed Test is successful Synaptic should work too.

Thanks for that.  I tried it.  Repo speed test went okay, but synaptic crapped out the same way.

Error message is below:

APT system reports:
E: Ordering failed for 231 packages

Any other suggestions??

Try a different repo on that machine, Dulwithe.

Thanks for the suggestion.  But I've already been through about 1/2 a dozen repos and no luck.  ;-(

Yeah, I've been scratching my head on this for a couple days now.  Why would it work a-ok on one machine but not on another  (that I pretty much treat the same)...??

Have you tried rebuilding the database, or starting Synaptic from the cli (to see errors)?

I rebuilt the database but get the same synaptic error.

Haven't tried synaptic from command line.  I'll give it a shot and report back.

Thanks for the link.  I tried a few of those commands already, but a few (dupes and clean) I haven't tried.

I'll also give this a shot and report back.

Okay, so I tried the dupe & clean stuff.  Worked a charm, seemingly.  Synaptic is now happily purring away downloading file 55 of 746.

I think I'm in the clear now on this one.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

D. :)
