Thanks for the link.  I tried a few of those commands already, but a few (dupes and clean) I haven't tried.

I'll also give this a shot and report back.

D.

Okay, so I tried the dupe & clean stuff.  Worked a charm, seemingly.  Synaptic is now happily purring away downloading file 55 of 746.

I think I'm in the clear now on this one.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

D. :)

746 files?!?!! That doesn't sound right.

Okay, so it looked like everything was going a-ok.  Synaptic was downloading packages, and since it had passed the previous error phase, I figured it would be a-ok to follow through and install all packages.

But, unfortunately, packages weren't installed, and when I tried again, I got the same problem.

The installation you have is apparently too old to update. Anything over 60 days requires a fresh installation from the latest ISO.

Installing LXDE Mini 2010.12 last night, which is the newest iso of that flavour on offer, I was wondering if none of our isos is more than 60 days old.

It was a sizeable download I had just to update the LXDE Mini version.  This was when I wondered how old the iso is.

Installed LXDE-2010-12 this AM. Changed sources.list. Using ftp.nluug.nl repo, updated: 168 pkgs/94mb. Successful.

Oh yes - all is successful.

I was just wondering, especially when I saw that in Tips and Tricks it is recommended to update at least every 30 days.

At least every 30 days, yes. Thought it is better to do it at least once a week.

The longer the period between updates, the greater the chance that something will go wrong.

I am with you, Neal.  That would mean that our isos most be updated every week?  That is the point I am trying to get to - in my own, cumbersome way.

Every week? No. Not remotely.
If the person who maintains each version is paying attention, any update that could cause an issue will be detected. If a new ISO is needed, it will be created. Otherwise, new ISOs are released quarterly.

Okay, so how do I tell which iso I originally installed from??

I am quite quite quite sure it was installed from a version NEWER than 2007.  If I remember correctly, I installed just about a year ago, from an iso near the same period as the iso I used on my problem-free work computer.  Might have even been the same iso.

So, If I CANNOT update my computer, I know I can store my files and reinstall, but then to get all the extra software and to do all the specific software and DE settings...  Now that is a chore...

If worse comes to worst, I don't suppose there is a way I can avoid some of the extra work (settings, printers, software) after reinstall/upgrade??

As root > rpm -qa | sort > installed.txt will create a text file with a list of your installed RPMs.

You can back up your settings, just the same as you back up your files.

Thanks for that, Neal.

I have had problems when backing up my settings (I am guessing you mean saving & restoring all the hidden files in my "home").  Especially the kde settings....  I get errors like: "can't copy (or write) file: kdesocket.blahblahblah".

When trying to copy all of /home, you will get that. But if you copy the individual hidden folders, you should be fine.

Really??  I have tried only certain folders before but have had the same issue.  I am guessing kde has a lock on some of the files.

<BRAINFLASH>  Should I try copying the files logged in as a different user using konsole and "su" ??  Maybe I am having trouble copying these files because until now, I have usually (always??) copied the files while logged into the user account I was trying to back up.
