Is there any app that will open AutoCad .dwg files?
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:22:37 AM »
Qcad will open .dxf files, but not .dwg files. Any Linux app that can handle these?
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.

open to view or open to edit?

dwf viewer should work in wine

to edit, i can't remember which editor can handle it if qcad can't

Varicad, is proprietary and will cost you but there is a trial version (fully functional) that should work.

Commercial apps .....  those that have paid the Autocad tax ......

You can download a trial version of Bricscad here

ProgeCAD LT is a free Autocad lookalike program.  Unfortunately only available for Windoze but it runs well under Wine.

I don't have AutoCAD exported files (.dxf) but I checked Inkscape and apparently, it can be imported.

Lots of apps will deal with .dxf files .......  but it is .dwg files that were asked about .....  and they are proprietary and require a licenced app IIRC.

:) You're right, Just19. I'm not really familiar with this sort of vector(?) files. But won't exporting the .dwg files to .dxf would only make the .dxf similar in structure as the .dwg files but can be opened (and perhaps even be edited) by apps that do not have .dwg files as native?

Like I said, I'm not familiar with the dxf and dwg but won't it be possible that a .dxf file could be imported back to a CAD app (in Windows)? Possibly the lines won't be where they are meant to be, hence the search for a more compatible alternative.

I think a closer description is interoperability.

Most CAD packages will open .dxf files .....  such as Qcad from the repo.

To convert a .dwg to .dxf one would need an app that opens .dwg in the first place.
If it is for a one off use then probably a trial of an app such as Bricscad would suffice.

If it is an ongoing requirement then a suitable application would have to be purchased ......  and they are not cheap!  :(

Teigha™ Viewer

Teigha Viewer is a free cross-platform application provided by the ODA for the visualization of CAD drawing files. It incorporates the power and flexibility of Teigha for .dwg files and Teigha for .dgn files into a single application that can render both .dwg files and .dgn files using a common command interface for both formats.

In addition to serving as a rendering tool, Teigha Viewer can be used as a test container application for TX developers. TX developers can load custom TX modules and run custom commands from the console, and can also customize the Teigha Viewer menus.

ODA members are utilizing the Teigha platform to create thousands of CAD and technical graphics applications across a wide variety of engineering domains. Teigha Viewer highlights only a small subset of the full platform capabilities.
Features

Teigha Viewer contains the following features:

    * Load, save, and render .dwg and .dgn files.
    * Recover and audit damaged .dwg files.
    * Zoom, pan, orbit, and select various preset 3D views.
    * Select an active layout via drawing window tabs.
    * Edit layer properties using the Layer Properties Manager (turn layers on/off, etc.).
    * Use menu and command window interfaces.
    * Customize menus via .cui files.
    * Load Teigha Extension (TX) plug-ins on demand or explicity via user request.

Print support will be added in a future release.

ProgeCAD LT (free version) can open and save .dwg files.
