Netbook connected by wire to laptop on wireless connection
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:04:29 PM »
I have an Asus netbook, an older Acer laptop, and verizon wireless router (among other equipment).  The Acer connects wirelessly to the router (on another floor) without problems, but the netbook has trouble connecting (both machines connect fine by wire to the router). I was thinking that I could connect the ethernet ports on the two machines, to allow the netbook to share the Acer's wireless connection (both machines running PCLOS 2010KDE).  But before I try:
- do I need a crossover cable? Is a 'normal' cable going to harm either machine?
- I know I need to share the Acer's connection via PCLOS Control Center; but is there anything need to be doe to setup the netbook?
I'd appreciate your recommendations, comments, warnings, etc.
If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And when I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?

Yes, it will require a crossover cable.

hurt with a normal patch? why?

what you want to do is kinda complicated, could end in a waste of time

i would first try to fix the wireless signal

i would change the antenna on the wireless router to improve signal strength, a 7db or 9db antenna will help you, the normal 2db antenna won't survive well after more than one floor

the antenna can be detached easily on most models, there is some signal
