[SOLVED] No sound - wrong sound card identified?
« on: February 20, 2011, 10:34:40 AM »
I have just made a fresh install of PCLinuxOS 2010.12 to take care of a new motherboard.  Now I have no sound.  I am trying to use the mobo's onboard sound chip - VIA VT1708S - but Control Center >> Hardware detection >> Soundcard sees the chip as SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) and has loaded the corresponding driver module snd_hda_intel.  How do I get my sound working?

May I suggest that from the Forum home page do a search for sound card

There will be many results yours being the 1st.
You may find the information that you need.

This may help until someone that is better equipped to help comes along.

Hope you find a solution !

Hi there, In Control Center, you need to open the Terminal, and type: alsaconfig. then just follow the prompts. Next open your mixer and you will see a drop down for settings. It should then show your VIA Chip. I have a Realtek ALC889A, and I get the same issue that your having until i complete these steps. You want to open ..preferences in the mixer. So,...Control Center>System> Terminal> alsaconfig and then ..preferences in your mixer. find your VIA, check or dot it, and you should be good to go.

Hello Again, I gave you the wrong info. Sorry. You want to go into PCC control center In the terminal type.....alsaconf. I just had to do it again myself. I was jimmy-jerking around and screwed up my sound. LOL.  So, PCC>System, find the terminal, and just type alsaconf and keep clicking yes. then type exit to get out.

First, an apology and the bad news - I was trying to find a fix for the wrong sound chip.  I installed a new mobo in my son's machine just before my own and I referred to the manual for his by mistake.

Second, the really bad news - the sound chip on my mobo is a Realtek ALC888, which I find ALSA can't handle ... with any amount of playing with alsaconf.

But ... the good news: a fix is available, posted on the PCLinuxOS forum at http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,85449.0.html, although this links to a Fedora forum for the fix itself.  The answer is to use OSS instead of ALSA.

Pity Linux continues to have problems handling sound, but at least I've got things sorted.

Thanks to Ramchu and tom43.
