Hi pinoc
you do not need to read 10 pages but only the first post
-p.
I think some confusion might come from the fact that your first post does not have an edit date at the bottom of it, even though your  quote  of of your Package repository list does have a date in it.

Given the O-P has been changed from whatever it originally was and therefore the responses to it before a week ago no longer make any sense, wouldn't it be a good idea to delete them so people don't get confused?

... and once the mirror move has terminated (whoever will not move within the next 5 days will be eliminated from the list) I will update apt-sources-list with the latest info, so each user can get an uptodate mirror list.

Anyone spot the Catch-22-style problem there?

I fear we'll be answering posts of the "Synaptic don't work no more" variety for quite some time.

We'll also need updated ISOs or new users won't be at all impressed!

We are suffering from the M$ ask the neighbours whiz kid syndrome.
By us converted Spoiled PCLinuxOS Users do not read the forum, they just push the update buttons in Synaptic, if updating at all.
If it's not working, ask the whiz kid.
Yesterday repairing/updating 3 installs
1 PCLinuxOS 2007, never updated, newinstall (LXDE).
2 PCLinuxOS 2009, update problems, newinstall (KDE).
3 PCLinuxOS FM 2012, update problems, fixed Synaptic.

So nice, Linux having a /home partition ;)

I wasn't criticising the team, just flagging that most users will not easily be able to get the new sources.lst because the sources have changed. Perhaps there should be a news item on the main site home page with a link to download and instructions to install that package so users don't have to search the forum and then wrestle with how to download and install it. Like most of the people here, I edited my repo listing in Synaptic, but I only really need the package/file for assurance if I need to change mirrors in the future. Those who need the package to do it for them won't get it because Synaptic doesn't work without it... So we need something else for them.

Similarly, my comment about isos was meant to head off the criticism and bad press if people download the current isos and then find the instructions that appear on first run don't work. It was just a reminder intended to spare us all extra hardship down the line.

I package when I have time and within my ability.

This server move was caused by unforeseeable problems with our previous primary server, it is an exceptional measure which should not happen again in the future. We have now a stable, and in fact even much faster dissemination of our packages to the end user. It is true that updating to the new sources.list requires manual intervention but that can't be helped. Again, this is an exceptional situation which is out of our control, no one could expect, and we are lucky enough to have it resolved for the better.

I will work on a small utility which will inform any user about important PCLinuxOS news, even if they do not access the forum at all. Once done, and if it works as expected, this tool will be included on the next iso so that the user will not miss such important events as the current one.

Unfortunately I have lots of things to do at work and not that much spare time to work for PCLinuxOS. Don't forget, we are an extremely small group of developers/packagers. Dedicated, but we all have our normal job as well. We will get there and as always it will be ready when it's ready. The more people become involved and help us, the faster.
In this sense, peace and much respect,
-p.

I understand that the actual mirror which acts as primary mirror is hidden. If so, may I know why? I can understand hiding the PASS mirror information.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

easy: our primary mirror has limited band width. One public mirror has a very friendly maintainer, is a super mega server with super mega bandwidth we could never even get close to match, and in addition they sync several times per day from us. Then all other mirrors can sync from our friendly public mirror, getting access to the latest packages with unprecedented download speed. This setup results in our packages being pushed out and being distributed as fast as possible to all our users around the world. My personal guess is about one day earlier compared to the previous setup and that is a good result, right?  ;)

As we are all a bit stressed due to lack of hands I'll look around the Advanced part of the Forum and see if there's any tasks I could help with. If you look at my signature you see I try to link to any important threads.

It's gonna take a little time to become useful without burdening Advanced members with a heap of questions; which has stopped me offering to do Testing, or Packaging. All I can think is to read the Advanced section, it's mechanisms, and try to learn by reading.

Important thing is to use initiative and try to support each other, and help where each person can. It's not a race to get a high post tally, but a matter of smoothing out the bumps, when they occur.
It is good that people complain a little so others are aware of the burden on such few shoulders.

That sounds a great idea, like a Popup out of the panel ? Would save a lot of threads being outdated, then updated, too many threads all over the place showing the lack of people with the Advanced staus and time to order/edit/Delete the flow of threads on the Forum.

Plus with so few available we don't have luxury of teachers to raise users to advanced status, it will take initiative from normal users. Sorry to blabber, ... :P

I understand that the actual mirror which acts as primary mirror is hidden. If so, may I know why? I can understand hiding the PASS mirror information.

I can tell you, it is easy, we do not want anyone but the authorized repositories syncing to it.  For Example. When ibiblio was our main repository lots of people still used it even though everyone was asked not to use it for updating.  That type of usage puts a huge load on the system and slows down the rysync transfer speeds of the official mirrors taking them longer to update.

We really want the updates to be as quick as possible while not placing a huge load on the main server. Therefore the main server is not listed in the sources list.

The primary mirror/main server is not a pay for use system or password protected like P.A.S.S. is.  The funds to run the primary/main server are entirely supported by the owner of the primary/main server.

I don't recall how many times while trying to rsync my public mirror with ibiblio, that I would get a connection refused, because the max connections had been reached. This is really not acceptable when trying to keep a public repository updated and current.

I am guessing PCLinuxOS/Community has set up their own server over which they have full control. Hence the primary concern with bandwidth.
First of all, thanks for doing this :)

Missing the 2 other Dutch mirrors (they are nluug mirrors):

http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/
http://ftp.vim.org/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/

Just for information.  ;)

JohnW

thanks for the info but these 2 mirrors are simply links to nluug, meaning all 3 URLs are on the same physical machine.  ;)
best,
