problems installing VMware tools on PCloS 2007
« on: February 19, 2011, 09:41:14 AM »
;D Hi guys i've some problems installing VMware tools on pclos 2007.... The installation reports the following problems:
Code: [Select]
[root@localhost ~]# cd /home/caelinux/Documents/Toolz/vmware-tools-distrib
[root@localhost vmware-tools-distrib]# vmware-config-tools.pl

Stopping VMware Tools services in the virtual machine:
Guest operating system daemon:                               [  OK  ]
Trying to find a suitable vmhgfs module for your running kernel.

None of the pre-built vmhgfs modules for VMware Tools is suitable for your
running kernel.  Do you want this program to try to build the vmhgfs module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] y

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match
your running kernel (version 2.6.22.17.tex2).  Even if the module were to
compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
[root@localhost vmware-tools-distrib]
Does someone have any idea about this?

Hi Dr.Faustus,

- is there any reason because your are using PCLOS2007 ? look like your kernel version is quite old (2.6.22.17.tex2),
not sure you can safely upgrade from there to current version, well quite sure you can't.

- specifically about vmware issue, have had the same problem in the past, then switched to VirtualBox.
(VirtualBox can read/convert from vmware images).
If you want to remain with vmware, check for kernel-headers version (should match running kernel version).

Hi,

2007 is outdated and no longer supported. Please install, and fully update, any of the latest PCLinuxOS versions where VMWare-tools compile perfectly fine.
buona fortuna,

yes, the reason is that pclos cames with a package made for engineering (CAELinux http://www.caelinux.com/CMS/] http://www.caelinux.com/CMS/). This is the only version for 32 bit  :'(
I don't know if it's possible to update PCloS without compromising the software inside.

Hi,

may be ... this can help:
- provided that you have a 64 bit CPU, you can run in VirtualBox a 64bit guest OS, on a 32bit host OS. (then using CAE 2010 livecd)

Hi Dr. Faustus,

could it be that you want use this version? If so then please note that CAELinux is not PCLinuxOS but a different Linux distribution which used PCLinuxOS as a base 4 years ago. Caelinux is not supported here. If you are interested to use PCLinuxOS then please install a recent version of an official PCLinuxOS iso-image. You can then ask for the engineering software to be packaged for PCLinuxOS.
Alternatively you could run or install the caelinux iso-image of your choice in any virtual machine setup on any operating system you have right now.
regards,

Yes so, i can't run a 64bit guest os because my host is a 32bit one.
i've tryed and doesn't work

the above is from VMWare, then:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003945
http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/processor_check_5_5_dt/dCpiQGhkYmRAZQ==

Basically both VirtualBox and VMware require HW Virtualization: Intel -> VT-X,    AMD -> AMD-V
addtionally IOAPIC support is required upon guest installation.

Glad to have you here in this forum, but you can obtain better support thru VirtualBox and/or VMware forums/wiki.

Dr Faustus, you need to go inside your BIOS as well, and enable virtualization support for your CPU.  Both newer AMD and Intel chips have this feature (your motherboard must support it too).

Aren't these some pretty large assumptions that his PC is actually 64-bit capable?  It may well be that he has an older, 32-bit CPU...

If this is a committed statement, than there may be little we can help with.  Bear in mind that there are no updates at all for this version.

PCLOS 2010 will run on 32-bit hardware.  If a comprehensive list of the engineering software can be determined, that the suggestion for packages requests is a very valid recommendation.  That way, you can have the latest version, and get on going updates...

Good point.  If it is 2007, it also means he is running VBOX 1.5, or 2.0, which does not support 64 bit hosts.

Except he's not running VBox...he's running VMWare (installed from outside, i would venture to guess).
