I'm trying to make a movie server for my Flat Panel TV, but XBMC refuses to play nice... maybe a rebuild with new libs along with Navi-X it's media browser?  http://website.navi-x.org/

Well it's in the repos but broke, as in.. don't work.. and http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,55384.msg443112.html#msg443112 didn't fit the bill because it's not something I'm requesting that's not in the repos..  Any other clues?

can you be a bit more descriptive than "refuses to play nice" and "don't work".

Does it miss an expected functionality, does it crash after you start it, somewhere after it has started up, refuses to start at all? If yes, start it from the terminal and report its output.

Why do you think a new build against updated libs will solve the problem you are observing?. The more descriptive you are with your report, the easier it is to track down the problem and fix it.

I will remove the package until it can be looked at later. We had an updated one in testing that did not work with nvidia drivers so the program is very picky.

I can admit that...
=> tried it some times in the past, but never worked for me (never needed it - and I thought it was working for other people; so I didn't make a notification here in 'broken packages')

Thanks Tex!!

I know the live cd runs works just fine on my pc, but the one in the repo wouldn't work on either box.  On the box with ATI gfx card I got 'you need to install a gpl 2 driver with' I had the next to latest ATI driver installed on that machine as I use it for Second Life.  Same on the other pc but with nvidia.  I don't want to install the live cd since it's not PCLOS.

I'm running it on a 1Gb RAM laptop with Intel 945 (i915?  need to check at home), driving a 1080P LCD TV at full resolution (over 802.11b wireless!) without issue.  (Well, ISO images of DVDs aren't playing, but I think that's the network's deficiency).

I'm very happy with this program to date, and would hate to lose it (having it non-functional a couple years ago made me set up ugh-buntu - shudder! - on the laptop just to run it  >:(), as my wife and daughters are comfortable (and reliant!) on it.

Could we please get more details regarding one person's "it's not working" before we turf it?

Thanks.

I have also used it in the past as a media player and have found it to be the best one easily.
but in the last year or so have not been able to get it working ( assumed it was because I changed to phoenix (xfce) as it worked with kde3.
Tried again a while ago and it still did not work, so I have been looking for an update but have not noticed one.
just ran it in a terminal and got this result

xbmc
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/home/david/.smb/smb.conf":
   No such file or directory
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/home/david/.smb/smb.conf.append":
   No such file or directory
ERROR: Unable to create application. Exiting

then I checked for updates again and noticed alot of updates have been added. So I will give it ago again when the system has been updated.

By the way XBMC has released a new version

Just got the new version of XBMC on my work laptop...running it now,and it seems to be fine.  After a few tests, I'll upgrade the one connected to my TV
 :D

(still doesn't seem broken, here.  do we have any more details to try and help the OP out?)

I just done a full upgrade and installed the new version and still got the same results.

xbmc
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/home/david/.smb/smb.conf":
   No such file or directory
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/home/david/.smb/smb.conf.append":
   No such file or directory
ERROR: Unable to create application. Exiting

I am also using using pheonix xfce version.

Does the file exist?

I use samba to share my movies, do I checked on my install:
Quote
[root@xbmclg ~]# ls /home/xbmc/.smb/ -lha
total 12K
drwxr-xr-x  2 xbmc xbmc 4.0K Nov 10 01:14 ./
drwx------ 24 xbmc xbmc 4.0K Feb 18 20:47 ../
-rw-rw-r--  1 xbmc xbmc  172 Feb 21 16:28 smb.conf
[root@xbmclg ~]# cat /home/xbmc/.smb/smb.conf
[global]
        preferred master = no
        local master = no
        domain master = no
        client lanman auth = yes
        lanman auth = yes
name resolve order = bcast host
        workgroup = WORKGROUP
[root@xbmclg ~]#

XBMC must have created the file, as I have no recolection of doing so, and you'll notice my user is tailored for running XBMC (I named it xbmc  :))...so that's all it's been used for...

If the file exists, are ownership and permissions OK?

I have finally been able to get aline which allows me to upgrade to adsl  :D
Thanks for your help pags

I have added the xbmc user in case it needs one
made sure all of the permissions were the same
your samba setup is different in that I do not have lines similar to
client lanman auth = yes
        lanman auth = yes

I have been trying to get samba working but have struck a problem with setting the folder's as a share
" can not modify the share
'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: usershares are currently disabled" ( incase it is relevant )
when I go into a browser smb://192.168.1.101 it seems to work, except that I can not browse the share.

when I start xbmc in a terminal I get

"xbmc
doing parameter hosts allow = 192.168.1.101 192.168.1.100 10.0.2.15
pm_process() returned Yes
added interface eth0 ip=fe80::224:1dff:fed7:eb0f%eth0 bcast=fe80::ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff%eth0 netmask=ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff::
added interface eth0 ip=192.168.1.101 bcast=192.168.1.255 netmask=255.255.255.0
ERROR: Unable to create application. Exiting"

Thanks for your help

Sounds like you struggling with samba, and xbmc... :(

You should separate these into two issues (troubleshooting, resolution determination, etc will be much easier).

My current samba server is an old 2009 install (yes, it needs to be updated...no time yet  :o).  I'm not sure how helpful comparing that setup to yours may be...maybe a new thread for the samba issue would be better?

For the xbmc issue, which version of xbmc are you running?  The version I have at home (that accesses the smb shares) needs to be updated, and any checking I would do on it would need to wait until I am home, again.  My work laptop here as the latest version.  When I start it from the command line, I do not get any extra output. :(

 :( :( :(

Updated my laptop connected to my TV, and lost the ability to select XBMC as a session from the login screen (the xbmc-standalone executable is still on the system, and appears to be running fine from the konsole...and my understanding is that this program is used as a XBMC session)

I am currently down-grading to the 9.11 release to see if it restores this functionality...
