Firefox: - Fatal [SOLVED]

Hi, I've been using PCLinuxOS, and MiniMe for around three years now, it just keeps getting better !

I have a Dual boot config with Win XP, as I have to use Windows for work, these days I prefer MiniMe as I find I have more control, and simplicity with installing what I want, which is minimalist, Browsing, Audio Player, Video, Text (Abiword, Kwrite.)

I've run into a fatal problem with Firefox, my prefered Browser, using Konqueror however and it is very good !

1. Shutdown, noticed I hadn't closed Firefox.
2. Booted next day, Firefox opened, asked if it should try to restore Tabs, No.

3. Firefox was fine for a few hours, then after going into Synaptic,
and installing a Music program, then finding the programme didn't work, I
deleted it through Synaptic. I always use Synaptic, Install/Uninstall.

(This was before I'd read that the server for repository (Synaptic) had
problem, was being relocated)

5. I thought all was clean and o.k. and decided to get back online to work, but
Firefox just wiggled its ICON in the Panel Task bar.

4. For some reason I ran Dupeclean GUI, just a hunch that there maybe some
duplicate files conflicting. May not have been a good idea.
Basically I have tried numerous times to uninstall, reinstall Firefox through
synaptic.

4.10 AM Tuesday 15 Feb
Just found Menu editor !!! (right Click the Menu Button)

I've switched the server for Synaptic and updated, about 180 items, System
running very well, was a good update !

Tried Uninstalling Firefox, reInstalling, but to no avail through this new
server.
.mozilla folder, in Home directory, not there so I put a copy (backup) into home directory, I'm really lost.
I note I have the executable "firefox", in /usr/bin, so I simply tried
Konsole from that directory, using firefox as the command.

As someone with more knowledge may have a better idea than I, I'm asking for help, as I don't want to break my System fiddling around, Thankyou so much for any feedback !.

You should never launch firefox or any web browser as root. It is a big security "no!" Launch firefox, whether from the menu or from a terminal, as user. [neal@neal ~]$ firefox works fine.

Rename your .mozilla directory to .mozilla-old; log out and log in (as user). Start firefox from terminal. Is the same message displayed? Or does firefox start?

I have had problems with Firefox for the last two days too.
Sometimes, it just closes on its own, when restarted from Desktop, it runs again, sometimes with an option to restore the opened pages, sometimes just opens with the home page.

Firefox - on occasion - fails to "release" itself properly therefore the system still thinks its running.  (The bouncing Icon often denotes that) When its happened to me, I just do a quick Ctrl+Esc and then Kill the Firefox process.

That has always worked for me.

Just to double check, are you running Firefox 3.6.13 ?  (Repo version)

I always just use the Shortcurt in Application Launcher> Internet.
Until I encountered this, I don't usually have hidden files showing, yes good advice though.
The shortcut properties say, command: " firefox %u " which I'm pretty certain is correct.

(just noting Konqueror doesn't allow html from above ICONS, like Quote,Bold, my config obviously, not to worry now, do manually. )

Also tried the Application Menu > internet > firefox, the ICON "wobbles" in the Taskbar for about three seconds, then nothing.

I checked System Activity to see if firefox running in background, but no.

Check the permissions and ownership of /home/francis/.gnome2/. It should be owned by you and be read and write for you.

Group: root 

There's also a directory, gnome2_private.

Properties > Permission > Ownership
User:francis
Group:francis

Open your file manager as root and change the ownership and group to your francis. You may want to check other hidden directories to be sure they are owned by you and not root.

o.k., so this .gnome2 directory has a directory called evince, which has a blank .txt Doc inside. 

Not sure why we get that output about that directory when trying to run Firefox ?

Also, my User: is "anthony" as seen in pics, didn't want to disclose real User for security.
Pic shows most directories, + gnome2, and gnome2_private, and it's properties, ownership.

Is this changing permissions a fix for the firefox problem, or a problem in general ?

Plus, just to be certain, you're saying to check every .directory in /home to make sure it has permissions for myself ?

will change permissions for all directories ?

Don't get carried away!   

The error messages you posted stated quite clearly it was a permissions problem.
