No mixer-volume control [Solved, somewhat]
« on: February 13, 2011, 10:20:48 AM »
Using xfce pheonix and e17. I used to have a mixer gadget I could put on the shelf or the desktop; now I can not get an icon to control volume anywhere. I switched back to alsa sound and that did not work either. Have tried all I can think of including reinstalling gadgets to get this back. Under e17 my keyboard volume control does not seem to work so I have no why to change volume. Have been using xfce until I can find a solution for this. I need to continue to use pulse audio, but as stated above this does not seem to be the problem. Have a fully updated system. I can't recreate the problem as I can't get back to square one to see what is going on. Any ideas, thanks, ken

Solution: Went back to the alsa sound system and was able to finally get a mixer control back. Was able to use a work around and get skype to work with the cam and mic. Will use xfce with pulse or kde until a better solution comes along.

Is it just the mixer which is a problem, or do you not have sound either ?

If just the mixer : do you have xfce4-mixer installed ?

volume works fine in alsa or pulse. I have volume control when in xfce desktop. I used to have volume contol in E17 with either a mixer icon on the shelf or the desktop, but after last upgrade no longer have a mixer icon and can't get it back anywhere. The gadget manager buttons appear not to work but it will add other gadgets but not the mixer. have tried reinstalling Emodules and switching back to alsa sound with no luck. I will try and disconect my webcam and mike from the usb and see if that works, but it will not be a solution.

I have been able to maybe narrow it down some. In the enlightenment settings pannel when i click on mixer and click launch mixer, it shows my driver(alsa HDA nvidia) which is correct,  and my webcam/ mike. the webcam is highlighted. It will not let me select the hda sound and driver. When I select it and click apply it just goes back to the webcam setting.

Now when I disconnect the webcam and go back to the mixer settings, I have nothing showing, no hda nvidia driver and no sound.
I believe that when the cam is connected, I have sound because of the driver being there but can't get the mixer control due to the webcam taking over. Don't know where to go from here exept back to the xfce desktop where everything is working correctly.

Didn't you say in first post that Xfce4 is what you are using ?

"Using xfce pheonix and e17"

You are not very clear, and didn't answer my question : DOES THE SOUND WORK ?

Yes I have sound, but as i stated in my first post and in the bug report, under E17, I no longer have a way to control volume. Everything works fine under xfce, in alsa or pulse, but no longer in E17 desktop. It used to work before last update, but i no longer can get a volume control on a shelf or the desktop. It acts like the gadget manager is messed up, don't know other than what I found in my last post. With webcam connected it appears to be not using my sound driver completely but using the webcam as default. Can't get it to stay on the hda setting.

Hi,

You could try using volumeicon, and also gnome-alsamixer. volumeicon provides the access to the mixer on the panel, but the default is to launch xterm with alsamixer. If you setup the preferences to use gnome-alsamixer after you install both, it will show the GTK application. I just don't know how to make it start with X in E17, but you will probably find out, or another E17 user will help you find out.
