(Solved) nForce2 Motherboard

I was thinking about reviving an old gaming machine to have out in the garage and only run PCLinuxOS on it providing everything still works! Here are the specs:
AMD 2500+ Barton @ 2.3ghz
Abit NF2 V2.0
Kingston HyperX 512 x 2 with BH5 Chips
Nvidia 5950 Ultra 256
Sound Blaster Audigy2
Western Digital Raptor 74gig
USB Wireless Adapter w/10db antenna

My question has to do with the nForce2 motherboard. I had read some time ago that there was a problem running linux on nForce2 motherboards. Does anyone know if this is still true today or is this more of a put it together and see what happens? Thanks!

had to be very old reports

my old mainboard was a msi nforce2 ultra, it worked perfectly until it died suddenly in 2009, until that time it ran pclinux for 2 years and mandriva for another two before pclinux

a friend has a nforce(the old model without sata), i sometimes have to load the 2010 livecd to save that machine, all ok

I'm currently running a computer that uses the old nVidia nforce2 motherboard, that I rescued from the trash heap (my brother was going to throw it away when he got his new computer). It runs PCLinuxOS exceptionally well.

I too had one that I ran for quite a while with a 2GHz processor with no problems on PCLOS.

I only stopped using it because during one of my rearranging of cases and motherboards, a previous intermittent connection on the motherboard became permanent.

Oh well, it was my excuse to by my current quad core system which also has an MSI motherboard.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Looks like I'll go forward with rebuilding the machine when I get the chance. Now I just need to deside what DE to run.

On a side note I found my AMD 2600M cpu today. If anyone remembers these cpu's, they would remember they were crazy overclockers. The one I have ran @ 2.6ghz and I believe the bios of my Abit NF2 is still setup for this cpu. Can't wait to see!

with that machine you can run perfectly kde4 with everything you want to add

don't forget to install nvidia video drivers form synaptic

Most of the reports I saw were from 2009.

My daughters machine use to be similar to the above and it ran KDE4 just fine. Since I'm going to use it for mostly games, I was thinking to go with something lighter. Maybe go with the KDE4 Mini or Gnome Zen, but then again E17 or XFCE could be fun. We will see!

kde mini is kde without extra stuff like office, multimedia and similar stuff, better to use the normal version

e17 is very nice but not perfect

FWIW, I run Phoenix Mini on mine. Although it runs KDE 4 just fine, I prefer the lighter weight DE of Xfce, since it's only a single core processor. The payoff is that it's incredibly fast running the lighter weight Xfce.

I was thinking of running Phoenix due to the 1 gig of ram. It would give me a chance to tinker with Xfce and since it will be for gaming I don't need a app heavy DE. Sounds like Phoenix Mini would be a good choice. I'll print up the Xfce guide and put it to good use. Feels nice to get excited about getting some new use from an old machine that at one time was a high end gaming machine. Might have to dual boot this with XP just to compare performance. Well maybe!

Just dropped into the Phoenix section and saw Phoenix 2011 Mini beta 2. Sounds like a good candidate for this machine.
