[SOLVED] Having two desktop environments. Possible?
« on: February 13, 2011, 09:15:02 AM »
Hello Everyone,

I have been running PCLOS on an old Samsung P4 laptop with 1GB memory.   I probably should have just retired this thing, but it was a gift many years ago and I still like it.  I tried a number of distros on it before I settled on PCLOS, but it has the dreaded Intel 82845G Brookdale graphics chip, and no other distro will run for any length of time before X crashes. X STILL crashes with PCLOS as well, but it lasts a lot longer before it does (several hours).

With KDE and these low specs, obviously it is not the snappiest performer, so I was wondering if it is possible to install LXDE from Synaptic and choose between the desktop environments at log (like you can with a number of other distros).  I see a number of LXDE packages in Synaptic, but not sure which one to select which will draw in all the other needed ones to have a full LXDE install.

I am asking here because I have it set up fairly well for this old laptop (not counting the slow performance), and don't want to have to reinstall.

I am going to screw up my install to attempt this?

Thanks for any replies

Bob

Well, I am impressed.  5 minutes to install, added the Plymouth theme, rebooted, viola!

And, as I had hoped, it does perform better.  Much quicker.  Let's see how long it takes for X to crash.
With a little customizing, LXDE can look as good as KDE.

Thanks for your help.
