did you update windows after you install but before you rebooted? that windows cd has what version of system pack? what version of virtualbox are you using?. Not everybody gets that error msg its probaby due to something unique on that windows installation image.

Can't update XP. It is XP Pro SP2. VB is the latest 3.2.12.

HoweverI just googled intelppm.sys and got the following

If you are seeing this problem repeatedly you can manually disable these drivers (with no negative side effect) by going to the following location in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Processor
Or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm

And changing the 'Start' value to '4'.

from http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2005/10/24/484461.aspx

But I can't get into the VB Windows registry to do this. Catch22 again. Looks as if I might have to reinstall.

install virtualbox guest additions and you will be able to set the resolution of virtualized system to that of virtualbox window.

more info at: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html

Forgot to mention that I checked this link and the info is much the same as the link I found. Seems to be a well-known fault.

I'm about to reinstall and will install guest additions and make the alteration in the registry before rebooting, as you suggest. That should solve both the blue screen and intelppm.sys problems

All fixed. ;D

I installed the guest additions as you suggested muungwana before rebooting and now the screen fits at the normal resolution n - and no scrolling necessary

I couldn't find the file intelppm anywhere in the registry so couldn't delete it. However - no blue screen.

Many thanks muungwana and all who helped.
