Scanner recommendation
« on: February 10, 2011, 08:08:20 AM »
I have a very large HP scanner that can scan pages 8.5 x 14.

It's the HP Scanjet 8250 and works very well in Linux.  I purchased it as refurbished.

I'm thinking about getting a new scanner.  I'd like to get something with a smaller profile but still have the ability to scan artwork on a page 8.5 x 14 inches.  At least 600 DPI.  And, it must work with PCLinuxOS.

I found this:

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Scanjet-Professional-L2722A-BGJ/dp/accessories/B003FMQWHA

Not sure if it's compatible with PCLinuxOS or what kind of scan qualiy it gives for artwork.

Anyhow, I'm looking.  If anyone knows of a good make that fits the bill and works in Linux, please let me know.

Toonfully,

Mark

Well, you've gone and picked a scanner like I picked my second last printer - common but hard to find drivers for!!
User manual here http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/c02051326.pdf
HP has no linux drivers on its site - big two only.  Best place for this sort of info is http://www.sane-project.org/ and go to "Supported devices".  A search brings up this result http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=HP&model=Scanjet+Professional+1000+Mobile&bus=usb&v=&p=.  Congratulations, yours is the only one not listed!!  Bit like my Canon ip1000 printer ::)
It's one of the issues that I got used to in all my years on Macs - find a list of what is supported then use that as your shopping list.  Fortunately you're still in the market so go through the SANE lists and take it from there.  Also there is a list of backends in /etc/sane.d.  Pity you can't do a trial plug in - that would give you a definite answer.

Thanks very much!  I'll have to do two fields of research.  Sane suport and actual reviews on scan quality. This model is so-so. I'll continue to look around.

My current scanner works fine.  (Knock wood). But it doesn't hurt to start looking and doing research before the actual need develops.

Unless you're desperately tight for space, I would recommend you remain with a flatbed scanner, if possible.  I've never been a big fan of roller-fed scanners, as they tend have alignment issues eventually, as inevitably one set of rollers degrades at a different rate than the opposing side, causing the page to skew as it is fed.  When you place a page on a flatbed, it remains as true and square as you place it, every time.

I was unaware of the roller problem.  Thanks!:)  I'm happy with what I'm currently using...just looking around in case I need a replacement.

I think I may have found my solution.

The Brother large format  MFC-6490CW Printer

I was so satisfied with the results I got with an MFC6890CDW I purchased that I went and got this one for Home use to set it up on a mixed interface network with different Operating Systems and network protocols (I have linux on my machine, my wife uses Windows and my teenage kids use Mac).
Once again the Brother machine proved to be extremely easy to set up even for my wife who is not an advanced user and the wireless connectivity works flawlessly, my children are able to print and scan wireless and even use it with the Iphone through the App Brother has developed for them.
ONCE AGAIN, GREAT PRODUCT FOR A GREAT PRICE!!!!
Expertise: Professional or Expert
Use: Home Office (Business Use)
Brother products owned: 3

Flatbed Scanner is large enough, print page output is ideal.  Wireless!  I can set up anywhere!:)  The question is, is it supported in PCLinuxOS?
