Hello All,

I am presently trying to find an online music service that lets me listen to as much music as I want online, and gives me a downloadable amount of songs per month that I can put on my hard-drive and carry-around devices (ie: mp3 player/cellphone).

I looked at the Napster plans which are interesting to me, but Napster doesn't natively work in linux.

Is there any way to get napster working in linux, or are there any other similar services that will work??

There is an important condition, however.  I listen(ed) to a lot of jazz and classical, including "experimental" type stuff on a European recording label called ECM.  Some performer names include John Abercrombie, Jan Garbarek, Kenny Wheeler, Arvo Part, and more.  Many of these recordings are available on Napster, hence, my interest in their service.

Any suggestions would be great...

Thanks.

Look at Frostwire

Thanks for the quick reply.

I looked at Frostwire and the accompanying "download legal music" at Frostclick.

1) I don't want to steal tracks via P2P (frostwire).
2) The tracks I want don't seem to exist on frostclick.  In fact, even major artists like Maria Carey don't come up with any results.  Michael Jackson only came up with 4 results.  So, for less mainstream stuff that I want, this service won't work.

Thanks though for the suggestion.

I solved my music needs listening to radio stations  :)

Not a huge fan of any of the 'services' - I use Amazon's store.  Most songs are 99 cents, and I own them.

I searched www.pandora.com for Arvo Part just to see, and he's there - not sure how much, but it may be worth creating a channel there. If you hear stuff you like, there is usually an option to buy.

Pandora has been getting better and better over the years, filling out my channels with more tunes all the time.

:D  No need to "steal", its just sharing, even though others call it different  :D  (Old discussion, hehehe)

But you are right on Frostclick, less then useful (never had a look at it before!)

We don't all have the same options:

"Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative."

And so ..... Frostwire is my friend  ;)

Thanks for all your replies.  Much appreciated.  I'll check into some more of the suggestions given.

It seems that Canadian linux users are kick-booted from many of the decent services.  仕方無い。

I think I'm going to have to resort to WinXP in VirtualBox to try Napster.  (I already got WinXP/VB installed to play diablo2, even though I don't use the install anymore because d2 works better under wine.)

You might want to try Slacker Radio (slacker.com) if you are in Canada. Far more selection than Pandora (at least in the US), though obviously you won't be downloading the songs for later playback with this service. It's free (with ads and 6 skips an hour) in the US, not sure about Canada though. Then you can pay for unlimited skips and no ads if you like it, or they have a new unlimited service that lets you listen to anything in their catalog (though through an app or browser) instantly.

May only be a free trial up north, I know they had to go through many legal / licensing hoops to get service up and running in Canada and I'm not sure how it compares to the US experience honestly. But at least it's licensed for playback in the region, complete with the specific legally required percentage of Canadian-based acts every hour too.
