from command line (Konsole, xterm. whatever you prefer) try the following two commands:

ping ntp1.linuxhosted.ca
ping 72.20.40.62

report back about both results

wired or wireless?

Just an aside this is a dual boot pclos/win7 box
and wireless is fine under Windows Grrrr........

so far, so good,

after installing Intel modules, did you do a reboot ? if no, do a reboot before anything else.

Yes I rebooted to windows to check the wireless which worked a treat.
Then booted pclos and connection failed!

OK, now try the following command (as superuser):

service network restart, then look at the end of the file  /var/log/syslog for any line containg the prefix "wlan":

command:
grep wlan /var/log/syslog

then post here
