[Solved] Card reader stopped working after update
« on: February 06, 2011, 01:29:38 PM »
I have an unbranded 6-in-1 card reader that has always worked flawlessly for me (in Windows, PCLOS 2009 and now PCLOS Phoenix).

I updated today (from my new PASS server) and, obviously, there were lots of updates because I have not been able to update recently due to the ibiblio move.

Now the card reader has stopped working. I plugged it into a Windows machine and it's working fine, so it seems as if the update somehow broke it.

lsusb shows this...
Quote
[main@localhost ~]$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0aec:3050 Neodio Technologies Corp. ND3050 8-in-1 Card Reader

Bus 004 Device 002: ID 045e:001e Microsoft Corp. IntelliMouse Explorer
... so the device is being recognised, but when I insert a memory card (and I've tried a few), I get nothing.

dmesg shows this when I (re-)connect the reader to a USB port:
Code: [Select]
usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 5
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 6

There is no additional dmesg info following the insertion of a memory card.

The update that 'caused' this contained the following:

You can try to manually mount the storage /dev/sdd,
being eventually succesfull the problem change to "sw notification" instead of hw related.

This is with a card inserted:

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost main]# mount -t auto /dev/sdd /mnt/test
mount: no medium found on /dev/sdd

I guess that means it is still a hardware problem?

I can't see the device in PCLinuxOS Control Centre > Manage Disk Partitions, either... just sda, sdb, sdc, which are my 2 HDDs and an external USB drive.

the above update had broken the connection to my SAMSUNG USB printer, that restarted to work after I disinstalled this component,
however there was eveidence of bad activity in /var/log/messages: Jan 30 19:49:46 dv1710 mtp-probe: bus: 1, device: 2 was not an MTP device
(mtp-probe is part of libmtp-utils).

Well, I updated from Synaptic again today, libmtp-utils was updated and, lo and behold, my card reader is working again.

Thanks to anyone who may have fixed it due to reading this thread. If it was an upstream fix, then I'm just glad someone picked it up  ;D
