oh guys, you keep me busy... See here, now you will also be asked specifically if you really want to remove OO... Are you sure? Yes? Really?
well then...

Last Monday it did not ask me to remove getopenoffice  it just removed it during an update.  And I was not installing LibreOffice.

1) today is not last Monday
2) installing lomanager via Synaptic will automatically remove getopenoffice
3) get the latest lomanager 0.2-6 and use that to install LibreOffice
4) please read the information provided here and if you still have issues post them at the end of this thread.

This is very true. This is also why I tend to stay WAY BEHIND the curve re: upgrades and major changes of applications.

However, respectfully,  there is much to be said of the intrepid folks who live on the cutting-edge of development and use and return to comment on problems that they encounter.

You ALL make it so much easier for the rest of us. Thank you!

I say this, having successfully transitioned for OpenOffice to LibreOffice as of today (20-2-2011).   ;D

I was able to get it installed using the terminal. And with the recommended Freedesktop integration installed after the suite is installed in PCLOS, it shows up under Office.

It looks like will be the default Office suite for Linux and Mac OSX systems - was a fork of Oracle Open Office started just in case Oracle ever discontinued support for the future development of Open Office.

It sucks that PC MacOSX does have an Oracle Office version  >:( But happily enough LibreOffice does!  :)

Let's all do ourselves a favor and drop OpenOffice and start using LibreOffice. OpenOffice, although still free to download, is no longer free as in free speech. The move of ex-OpenOffice developers to LibreOffice is the first sign that OpenOffice will become obsolete. It may take a while as in the ongoing browser war between IE and Firefox but I'm putting my bets on LibreOffice.

Archie,
I will stick for a while with OO because I use it at work and I am not still sure enough if the new LO is stable or compatible enough with M$ office which is still used by many of my colleagues.

Of course, uncleV. We make our own individual decisions. But IMHO, switching to LibreOffice is inevitable unless OO users want to get stuck to a deprecated version or compile OO from source (and even then it is not guaranteed to work seamlessly in PCLOS).

And for me, the sooner it's done, the sooner we can get on with other things. I cannot tell you with certainty of LibreOffice's stability and compatibility with Microsoft Office files (since I do not keep those archived on my computers) but I am certain that it is compatible with OO (at least the Writer and Calc files are).

I hope you can make the switch soon.

My experience was that LO was more compatible with MS files than Oo.  But I didn't make a comprehensive study - just my experience with the couple of files I deal with.
