problem with graphic driver - cannot start PCLOS.(SOLVED)
« on: February 04, 2011, 07:35:41 PM »
Hi.
I've mad a mistake. I thought KDE was a bit slow and searched this forum for advice - I came across an old thread suggesting that I should replace the Nvidia proprietary driver by "nv" driver: "..it was slow but I changed the proprietary drivers to Xorg nv drivers and is fast and responsive." (here)

My graphic card "NV44A [GeForce 6200]" had the "Nvidia 6100 and later" driver. In the control center - "set up the graphical server" I choosed "Xorg - nv" - clicked on "test" and it showed the multicoloured testscreen. But when I clicked "yes" at "is this the correct setting" the screen showed a random pattern for a few seconds and then turned black (no signal) . Because I couldn't see anything on the desktop I had to en the session by pressing the reset button. Since then the videocard doesn't work and the boot process is stopping at some point asking to for login.

I photographed the screen just before the boot process stops and leaves me in a shell:

Is there a way to restore the settings / the  Nvidia proprietary driver using the commandline? Or any other way to make the graphic KDE run? I am greatful for any advice.

PCC is available with an ncurses interface, and a graphical one. Simply type PCC, and in the menu that comes up, choose Display. Alternatively, you can type in drakx11.

EDIT: Removed the huge image.

If you can get to the command line, you can try
XFdrake
Note: it may be XFDrake....I forgot
Note: I think you need to be in root ( su...password..)

good luck

at the bottom of your picture it shows that you are logged in as root
just type in XFdrake and press enter

That should bring up the the XFdrake GUI then just click on the box graphic card
go to nvidia click the triangle next to nvidia then select the driver and follow the
prompts

when you are done it should return you to the CLI , type exit and that should return you to being
logged in as normal user then just type startx and press enter.

this should bring up the desktop.

Hope this helps !

Wow, it worked! Up and running. So easy!

Before I started this thread I had read about XFdrake, but I didn't think it was so easy!  ::)
I had no idea how to use XFdrake, so I just didn't try it.  ::)
I am happy.  :D

Ramchu: In your screendump you already have a functioning graphical server so I was not convinced the same thing would work for me, but XFdrake have a "console-based--graphical-interface" that saved me.

My computer has onboard graphics (no option to disable in BIOS ) I also have an nvidia pci graphics card
and when I run a Live CD this is the method that I use to get graphics from the nvidia card.

Glad that this helped you - Now if you would go back to your first post here and click on Modify and
add ( SOLVED ) to the subject line  we would appreciate it.

Thanks !
