Fresh installation got broken by update
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:36:13 PM »
Hello there.

Just installed pclos 2010.1 on my p4@1.8ghz-asus mb-512 mb ram-nvidia vanta graphics-80gb seagate.
Worked like a charm  :)
Then I went ahead and did "synaptic->mark-all-upgrades->apply" and went for a cup of coffee...
Now after a reboot, the darn thing won't boot. It hangs different places in the boot sequence. Situation is the same in boot-safe mode...

I suspect the new kernel or something else were a bit too much for my old box ???

Any input, help or advice would be deeply appreciated.

TIA - Regards Benny

There are a number of problems apparent here.

1. You should be installing from the 2010.12 image, not 2010.1.

2. There is only one working repo currently available, so you need to set up Synaptic to use that repo.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,86168.msg719016.html#msg719016

3. Once you have the proper image installed and have Synaptic set to use the ibiblio repo, you need to select, in order, Reload --> Mark All Upgrades --> Apply, then Apply again from the confirmation window.

4. No new kernel is installed with any upgrade. If a new kernel is desired, it must be manually selected, along with it's proper devel package, and installed in a separate action from any other upgrade or installation procedure.

5. On first boot after a new kernel is installed, it will take longer to boot than normal, as any dkms modules will have to be rebuilt to work with the new kernel, during the booting process.

Not clear here if Synaptic successfully finished the update process?

2010.1 is too old to expect that a full upgrade will be successful. The latest ISO released is always the preferred installation media.

Install from a fresh ISO not something that is over a year old.

What I'd like to know is where you got this old iso and why did you use it instead of the most recent release?

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Hi guys

Thank you all.

@uncleV: I don't know, went away for half an hour and on return it was stranded at init....
@neal: :) Actually it was LXDE-flavour. Thanks.
@Old-polack: thanks, sorry, i've missed the info about ibiblio-repo being on the move, been slaving at work the last few weeks. I'll be sure to try your suggestions.
@texstar: well, I was fresh out of cd/dvd's and had the old one lying around. My thougt was, install that one and update it... and abracadabra... bob's your uncle :) nb.: have used my 2 last cd's for pclos-lxde 2010.12 and given them to friends, they are now up and running, smiling.
Note to self: BUY NEW CD's  ;D

?) I thought it was preferred, NOT to use the ibiblio-repo, so me being danish, I pointed it to "ftp/klid.dk..."

I'll give it another go with a fresh 2010.12 (2011.1?) iso and skip the coffee ::)

Melodie, there is no script that substitutes the teaching art of O-P  ;)
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

cdbc,
LXDE 2010.1 is not upgradable to now. A year is just too long a time.
I hope you can get some CDs soon. :)
