One more observation:
Yesterday I messed with ntfs-3g stuff and borked the system.
So I reinstalled from the remaster where I had installed GTK version only.
After install, I tried to launch Avidemux-GTK2 and the result was the same as before: didn't start at all.
Then installed Avidemux-QT4, and tried to launch Avidemux-GTK2 again. Same result: didn't start!
Then I tried to launch Avidemux-QT4 and it started successfully! I closed it and tried Avidemux-GTK2 again and this time it launched correctly.
So my observation is: Avidemux-QT4 is creating
some file or some record somewhere during FIRST launch, and Avidemux-GTK2 does NOT. But Avidemux-GTK2 uses that
some file or some record somewhere created by Avidemux-QT4.
Conclusion: Avidemux-GTK2 package needs to be checked and corrected. I would do that if I could
