[ SOLVED ] MythTV Backend Problem
« on: February 02, 2011, 10:07:26 AM »
EDIT:
The problem was apparently caused by running some of the Myth packages as ROOT from the command line, which in turn caused permissions to be changed on some files, thus preventing the ordinary user having access to them.

Completely removing all the relevant packages, and manually cleaning out of the filesystem all remaining files related to Myth, rebooting and reinstalling cured the problem.

I then set it up staying well away from the terminal.  ;D

************

I have tried to set up MythTV but have hit a stumbling block.
I get an error on starting MythTV to the effect that it 'cannot connect to the master backend server'.

mythbackend is reported as running in the Services & Daemons list in PCC. It is ticked to start at boot.

Starting it (restarting) using the button in the list indicates that it is not in fact running at all!

Quote
Stopping mythbackend: [FAILED]
Starting mythbackend: [ OK ]

Repeating the buttin press gives the same result.
Stopping the daemon also shows a [FAILURE] but the 'running' changes to 'stopped'.

Finally

Code: [Select]
[root@Dell user]# service mythbackend status
mythbackend dead but pid file exists

EDIT
Happens with 2.6.33.7 & 2.6.37 kernels -- I need the new one for the DVB device I am trying to use.

Suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

regards.

Dang!

I was hoping for someone to enlighten me so I could test this MythTV thing.

Maybe I will just go through the history and uninstall everything this dragged in .....  if I cannot get it to work it is useless to me.  :(

That link refers to a different error -- or so it seems to me .......

Quote
Can't connect to local MySQL server

I do not get that error.

MythTV launches and I can use the GUI to make all the settings .....  but at each step I get the error .....
Quote
cannot connect to the master backend server

There is, apparently, something the matter with the mythtv daemon from the other tests I did.

I have reinstalled MythTV which included a reinstallation of the daemon.

I will try reinstalling all the MySQL packages now in the hope that something will get corrected.

Thanks for the help.

regards.

Did you try with a manually created database --  myth
?
else, is there a /home/~/.myth  folder you can delete?
Just a stab in the dark...

I tried reinstaling all the Mysql packages to no avail.

I had cleaned out all Myth related files before I reinstalled it and started set up from scratch.
Previously I had not reached the present point but had some other misconfigurations.

I wonder if this is just a set up thing?

I have access to all the settings in the GUI, but most of them are meaningless to me -- this being my first real attempt to get this running.

Any ideas on that score?

Jeeeezzz, you are tough attempting mythTV  ;D ;D. It is a beauty but ... well enough about emotional aspects.

1.. Have you got a copy of Dellji's pdf file? Litterally followed this you should have the capability of playing TV I am not taking it any further at this stage.

2.. Depending on if you are running it on Gnome or KDE (sounds like you are using KDE) there needs to be slightly different start preparations.

3.. The giveaway I think is:

Quote
mythbackend dead but pid file exists

You may have a deadlock

4.. I think you are on the wrong track with re-installing

I am diving into my records to have quick look. I can't remember if this was covered in delji's thread or my own thread, probably my own.

wedgetail,
thanks for searching .......  and no I did not find that error in either of ye're threads.

You may have a deadlock

so what could be done?

Yes I am on KDE

EDIT:
I discovered a misconfiguration .......  a required field not filled in ....... password or whatever it is called .....  0000 .....  absent!  Duh! .....  will try a reboot to see if this improves things.

This is my topic, and the dead pixel end is dealt with in some degree.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,83900.15.html

It is too late tonight, and I can no longer think straight.  Tomorrow I will do better for you.

1.. When you have installed it is unlikely there is anything wrong with the install nowadays
2.. Mysql must be first point to get running, see in my thread the simple check I do "mysql"

Plow through the link above, I think you can skip the first page. I am off ZZZzzzzz

Edit:   0000 that is vital I can assure you   ;D I am sure dellji covered that in his pdf too.

I launched mythtvfrontend from a terminal, the message popped up and I 'OK'd it, then Esc to exist, got the same message and OK'd it again and choose to exit.
Below is the relevant part of the terminal output which shows where the backend is not functioning.

Code: [Select]
2011-02-03 12:27:43.496 MythCoreContext: Connecting to backend server: 192.168.3.11:6543 (try 1 of 1)
2011-02-03 12:27:43.496 Connection to master server timed out.
Either the server is down or the master server settings
in mythtv-settings does not contain the proper IP address

2011-02-03 12:27:43.496 Unable to determine master backend time zone settings.  If those settings differ from local settings, some functionality will fail.
2011-02-03 12:27:47.216 MythCoreContext: Connecting to backend server: 192.168.3.11:6543 (try 1 of 1)
2011-02-03 12:27:47.216 Connection to master server timed out.
Either the server is down or the master server settings
in mythtv-settings does not contain the proper IP address

2011-02-03 12:27:50.034 Deleting UPnP client...
Error in my_thread_global_end(): 2 threads didn't exit

Is there some timing function in the settings I could edit to see if it is just a time-out problem?

Don't run mythbackend manually as root - the service is started at root, but change permissions to the system mythtv user. You can and will mess your system up totally. Reinstall the OS if you have run mythbackend as root - permissions for lots of mythtv related files/folders can have changed to root now.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,83900.msg697113.html#msg697113

I find the above to be in equal parts disturbing and almost unbelievable.

I can understand that all of MythTV may have to be removed because of bad permissions .......  but to need to reinstall the OS?

I may as well look to cleansing my system of MythTV and all its files it seems.  :(

OK, I cleaned out everything, rebooted and installed Myth again.

This time I did not go near the command line.
I launched the setup from the menu, and using what little info I had gathered with previous attempt successfully set up my DVB-T device, scanned it and displayed the available channels.

So the setup is near complete .....  I have to investigate the radio channels yet.

For some reason it locks up after a couple of minutes running the TV ....  will have to look inti that too.

For now this thread can be marked [SOLVED] as the backend issue is resolved .....  and was most likely due to me running something from the command line as root, which affected the permissions of some files.

regards.
