EDIT: The problem was apparently caused by running some of the Myth packages as ROOT from the command line, which in turn caused permissions to be changed on some files, thus preventing the ordinary user having access to them.
Completely removing all the relevant packages, and manually cleaning out of the filesystem all remaining files related to Myth, rebooting and reinstalling cured the problem.
I then set it up staying well away from the terminal.

************
I have tried to set up MythTV but have hit a stumbling block.
I get an error on starting MythTV to the effect that it 'cannot connect to the master backend server'.
mythbackend is reported as running in the Services & Daemons list in PCC. It is ticked to start at boot.
Starting it (restarting) using the button in the list indicates that it is not in fact running at all!
Stopping mythbackend: [FAILED]
Starting mythbackend: [ OK ]
Repeating the buttin press gives the same result.
Stopping the daemon also shows a [FAILURE] but the 'running' changes to 'stopped'.
Finally
[root@Dell user]# service mythbackend status
mythbackend dead but pid file existsEDIT
Happens with 2.6.33.7 & 2.6.37 kernels -- I need the new one for the DVB device I am trying to use.
Suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.
regards.
