Thanks Xenaflux! I ran into a new problem too: when I ran  updates via Synaptic, my wireless adapter (Netgear WG121) stopped working. It works perfectly on a fresh/un-updated install. After updating, I did try to "fix broken packages" & ran apt-get update & upgrade too. But nothing seems to fix it. But it isnt safe to not update my system, right? Any thoughts here?

Hi linuxpcplus,

you can use the initial installation and not update, there is no security risk. If you update now you will have to download a huge amount of packages (probably 2 GB or even more) and you wouldn't gain much anyway. Don't update now and just use what is on the initial installation, there is more than enough to play with and you should be fine. I will work on an updated FullMonty in about 3 weeks from now, then you can use that for a fresh installation of the latest packages.

have fun,
-p.

Will that new version allow me to keep my current wireless drivers (those installed by default on FM)? As I said, my problem was lost my wireless adapter support when upgrading.

the new version will have the latest kernel plus drivers, and they should work with your wireless adaptor but this can be easily tested by running the live-session of the new FullMonty.

Cool! Thank you I will wait & see!
Can you tell me what is the easiest way to install new software? I dont know how to build from source or install RPM's that I download. I tried using the instructions I found in the wiki to install RPM's, but I keep getting a "no such file or directory" error. But I KNOW the file is there!
What should I do?

no need for RPM Installer, Synaptic does it all for you. Installing rpm-packages which are not available in Synaptic is not supported here and may compromise your system because they are not tested by our developers. Please only use programs available through Synaptic or if not available there then make a new package request.

RPM-Installer for RPM-Package
Simple desktop file to install rpm package,
or analyzed rpm package via right click.
Notice:
It is not recomended to install packages
outside the repos for multiple reasons!

One of the multiple reasons is that if you have a problem with them, it will be unlikely ( but possible )that anyone will try to help on this forum.

First, let me reply to Pinoc. I agree that Synaptic is the safest way to instal packges & that is the ONLY way I would if I COULD. Unfortunately, many of those packages are severely outdated which means they wont give me the latest features. For example, the GIMP version in Synaptic is 2.6, but 2.8 has been out for quite awhile now & offer features I really need such as single window. I did extensive checking & 6 out of every 10 packages pre-installed in FM are outdated by 1 version or more. Please understand, I LOVE this Distro & yes, I have officially made the permanant switch from Zorin to PCLOS FM. In most cases, the older packages are fine, but in some cases like Gimp or KDEnlive, I HAVE to have the latest versions in order to get the professional features I need. Oh, & Crossover is an ABSOLUTE MUST for me, not available in Synaptic.
Now to answer Xenaflux: Yea, I actually found RPM installer & have used it to install 3 packages. Thanks.

Hello,
I have FM light installed from a fresh install earlier this year. On upadating this week a problem has occured on the FM and kde settings.
I may have mistakenly put a query on the main PCLos forum here http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,106587 on an issue with the last kde4 update that has removed most of the the FM desktops. I am left with the media background and standard kde menus.
Can anyone help on this, failing that a reinstall of FM light and new user may be needed, but if I can restore the original settings with a "tweak" that would be the best result.
Thanks for a great OS that the missus loves to use.
Any guidance appreciated.

I'm afraid the reinstall of fm_light and a new user account is the only way to get back to a functional FullMonty desktop.
As mentioned before I will work on a new FullMonty soon and then these problems hopefully will no longer occur.
thanks for the understanding,
-p.

Thanks for clarifying that P.....at least I know it wasn't me mucking the system up and your swift help saved me a lot of head scratching.
Will re-install FM Light and create a new user. Good work with the FM so far.

linuxpcplus, all packages in the PClinuxOS Repos are crafted to work with PCLinuxOS, and all the many packages and dependencies. Installing a package outside of Synaptic, will eventually destroy your System due to incompatibility with existing packages and dependencies, in most cases.
You could make a Package Request for programmes you feel have lost there functionality for your needs, however as you probably noticed the Forum is really busy with testing and Development so it might take a while. Make the request anyway and it's in the the pipeline.  ;)
