Why does 2010 appear on the first boot menu screen? I installed Full Monty 11.04.

This Full Monty version is based on PCLinuxOS 2010 with all kind of extra programs from Synaptic, exclusive layout and updated to the latest in 2011 april. (11.04)

That makes sense. First time I tried Full Monty and thought 11.04 meant 2011 as a base.

I'm fairly new to Linux, and currently have the GNOME desktop version installed as a dual-boot with windows xp.  I'd like to change over to the KDE Full Monty version.

I have the Full Monty DVD burned, and can run it LiveCD mode. When I start the install portion, it wants me to select a partition to format. Not sure if this is going to eliminate all of the stuff I have on the existing partition or not (?). I have a lot of things on there that I wouldn't want to lose.

Any help on how I can change over to the KDE Full Monty would be great.

Thanks,
Bruce C.

Hi Bruce,

when you format a partition all stuff on it will be erased. If you want to install the FM DVD you should use custom install (as explained in the Installation Help accessible from Desktop 6 in the live-session) and create a new ext4-partition of at least 20GB, mount that under "/" and then install the FM to this partition.
Note: if this seems tricky or you want to save lots of updates from April up to today, then just wait ~ a week until the new FullMonty 2011.09 will be out, just working on this one right now...

Alternatively, and maybe best in your case, make sure your system is fully updated, then open Synaptic and install fullmonty-light into your Gnome installation. Then setup a new user-account so the FM-layout can be applied to it. Next logout and in the login-window under Session choose KDE, and login to a the newly created user-account having the lightweight KDE FullMonty layout. If you want to keep this as your default account then copy all your private files from the old account into the new user FM-account.
hope this info is useful,
good luck,
-p.

... and worth every second of the wait.  ;D

ext4-partition of at least 20GB

Will this be larger than the last?  I only reserved a 15G space at the beginning of my disk (with extra partitions for storage) - still ok? :P

no, it can not be larger because we can only have 4.0GB on a liveDVD. 15GB for "/" was the minimum but 20GB is safer just in case you add some other applications later on. Though not required waiting is indeed a good option, as there will probably be about 3GB of updates since April 2011.  :P

I red here that the new version 2011.09 will be out soon.
Is this the topic where the announcement about that will be done?

Best regards,

great to hear it works! The announcement of the new FM will be made in the PCLinuxOS General News and Announcements section here.
But before the FM I need to get some other things fixed first, so it can take mare than a week...

Thanks,Pinoc!

I think about a fresh FM install. Can I install FM now and upgrade via Synaptic to the new version in 1-2 weeks? No problem for me to wait, FM Light is ok for now :D

Other question: Can I install task Gnome (2 or later 3) desktop via synaptic in FM?

You can install the latest FM now, then try to do a full update. This may work or not because there will be a huge amount of packages since last April; if it works then you will essentially have the new FM. Not completely because there will be some new things in the new FM.
Or don't update the FM2011.04 and use it as it is. Then when the next FM comes out do a fresh install of that one.

Yes, of course you can install task-gnome into FM. Remember, the FM is just a customized version of the normal KDE-desktop.
good luck,
