Hi
I managed to get my sound card working on my desktop. I ran the Synaptic updates and then it started working after a reboot, but I don't have 5.1 surround on it. I suppose that is called Pulse Audio? I've enabled Pulse Audio but still only have stereo :(.

Another problem me being a newbie I messed up the multimedia screen by accidentally deleting the Video folder by closing it, after resizing. How do I restore the desktop to it's default views ?  ???
Thank You  in advance :)

good news on your sound card!
So you deleted the Video-container on desktop 4 after unlocking the widget-layout via fm_setwidgets? To restore the default FM-widget layout just run fm_setwidgets from the Tools-container on desktop 6, then choose your startup-desktop and the FM-widget layout for your screen-resolution.
good luck,
-p.

Thanks Pinoc for the advice It is greatly appreciacted thats why I love PCLinuxOS the support is awesome. I did manage to restore the desktop by creating a new user then deleting my old user and presto I had all my desktops restored. But I had to redo my settings cause I deleted the user files too, but that how I learn by making mistakes lol.
I want to switch completely to linux , at the moment I dual boot with win7 but I cant get drivers for my wacom pen and touch tablet and a few other devices for linux. I'm sure the will b available in the not too distant future :).  I havent tried wine yet perhaps I might have some luck there for some of my windows apps eg my car diagnostic tools for ecu's and engine management.

I have been telling all my mates about Texstars PCLinuxOS  and your FM version, I must admit I am in awe with the FM version infact all the new versions of PCLinuxOS.
Thanks for the help and keep up the good work. The world is definately a better place with people like you and Texstar, thank you.
Hava lovely day
 ;)

Hi tony1ant,

good to hear you get things they way you want them. Should not have been necessary to create a new user but just run fm_setwidgets in the existing user-account, please also read the info here.

Some wacom stuff is already installed on the FM but something had to be fixed in the startup script, see here for some more info. Don't know if this has been applied and I have no such tablet to test it.

wrt your graphic card issues, the updated Nvidia-driver should appear today/tomorrow in Synaptic, please make sure to properly update your system. Then after the automatic update of the Nvidia driver, reboot to see if the new driver works better.

good luck,
-p.

Hi All,
First, I have to say our new FM 2011.4 is the best yet!   It just keeps getting better.  Thanks for all the countless hours.  I am still seeding, but traffic is lower now.  A few minor questions:  1: I have noticed that upon leaving, (shut down, log out, reboot, etc.) the dialog box that follows is kind of clear and hard to read.
This only seems to happen after I have done my first update and from then on.  The original .ISO installs do not have that problem and have a nice dark gray background witch makes the text very easy to read. I found this happening to me and others on several different pcs and with the last 3 FM distros.  Is there a fix/work around?
2: I like to backup my system.once I get it tweaked to my taste.  If I backup my home folder including hidden files, is that all I would need to copy over a fresh
install to do a recovery?  I would prefer making a remaster type backup, but I'm thinking it is just to big? 13gb?  Or can it be done?  And if so, how?
3: Lastly, I really wish I had had the FM Karaoke resources when I was still in the band.  I love the variety and the quantity of songs you have given us.  Can you point me to your or a good/safe source?  I have looked, but am unsure about what I am looking at and see a lot of .mp3 stuff out there and am worried about copy rights.  The midi files are free of all that hassle right?  I would love to download more.  Also, I see the files are .kar.  Do they come as midi files with the lyrics already imbedded in them?  It looks like you are using kmid as the player, Right?  Can't wait to hook up some of my midi devices.  Thanks again for such a complete and polished OS.  PCLinuxOS Full Monty 2011.4.
Dan
Great Job, Dan

Hi Dan,

great to hear you like the FM  ;) to your questions:
1) logout etc on my updated FM looks as usual. Which video-driver do you use or did you change any graphic settings?
2) you can not do a remaster of a 13 GB system, maximum size using mylivecd is ~ 10-11GB. Backing up your Home-folder (incl. hidden files) and putting that on a fresh + updated install should work, you may need to adapt the user ids on the new system from your backup.
3) the karaoke-files are available in the repo (karaoke-songs2) and in FM kmid is set as default application for playing .kar-files
regards,
-p.

Hi pinoc,
I posted to the original post  also, hope that's ok?  Feel free to delete any or all of this subject...
My #1. Logout showing up:  I have found this only to be a problem if EFFECTS are turned ON (Not that big of a deal).  Tested on A> a intel dual quad with amd radeon 6870 using suggested 11.3 & radeon hd 2000 & newer driver  B> a HP 3.2 laptop zd8000 with ATI Tech. M24 1P radeon mobility x600 ogl 1.4 mesa 7.5.2 & C> asus p4 2.4 nvidia Geforce 4 ogl 1.5.8 nvidia 96.43.18 (again, no big deal and I did try all the effect options, only one makes a difference is ENABLE box)

NEW: I found I can Make the shutdown dialog easy to read again (after enabling effects) by changing a option in desktop themes. Action taken:
Configure Desktop> Workspace Appearance and Behavior> Workspace Appearance> Desktop Theme> Details (TAB)> Shutdown Dialog (at bottom of list).
I changed From: Glassified Shutdown Dialog  To: Oxygen Shutdown Dialog, Then clicked Apply.  Now has nice dark background and is easy to read...   ;D

#2 Backup: thanks for the info. Have not tried it yet, but at least I now have a backup option.
#3 The Karaoke more songs package in the repository appears to be the same songs as that already installed in Full Monty (Also not a big deal)

The good far out weighs any minor things I might like to change/add.  Most users may never notice or care about.  EDIT: All Good Now! ;D
Thanks for your time, Dan ;D

hi pinoc,

I've downloaded the full monty live CD version. I tried to loading the live CD and it goes to DOS screen and asking for login and password. I tried guess and root but in the end it prompt me to localhost and a cursor.

How does the live CD on FM work though? I'm having a little problem of loading it. Do I need to load other PCLOS first (full version or minime)? then upgrade to Full Monty?

Thanks

Hi pcura,

The FullMonty is a liveDVD which, as all other PCLinuxOS isos, can be run in -and installed from- a live-session. Have you read the FullMonty info and esp. tried Important Notes 2:
Quote
Users with NVidia cards: the liveDVD should load the correct Nvidia driver. Should you be dropped to a cmd-line, please login as guest with password guest and then enter: startx.

Hello All ... I hope I'm posting this the right way and in the right place.  (As you can see, I'm old but 'brand new' to PCLOS but I have been a 'guest' reader of these forums for months ... didn't understand much though!)

I'll start with just a couple of questions I'm not sure about ... but rest assured that I'll be searching/asking many more!

Briefly:  I'm currently posting this from a 'live' FM dvd session.  It wouldn't load even with the "guest-guest-startx" procedure when the command line login appeared.  The 'whole screen' error message seemed to be about the nvidia driver so I re-booted and chose option 3 "VESA" mode, which obviously is working for me now.

I'm trying to install to an old P4 2GHZ box - 1.5GB ram - 2 HD's (60 & 160 GB) - nvidia Gforce MX440 64MB video card.

The 60GB drive has a 'fubar'd' XP installation that won't boot but the contents are readable using PCLOS
(of course ... who would expect anything less from PCLOS!  ?don't know how to insert smiley here?)
The 160GB is new and empty.

Questions:
1>  For installation, does it matter that I had to start this 'live dvd' session in VESA mode?
2>  If I leave the small HD alone and install to the empty HD, will it be possible to create a dual boot later?
3>  Partitioning?  30GB for FM install ... 4GB for swap ... then what?  (not really into multimedia so I'm thinking
that I could maybe go with 20 - 30GB for data storage and leave the rest for 'playing' later ... if and when
I get a handle on the PCLOS basics.) still ?don't know how to insert smiley here?

I've gone on too long ... any and all help will be greatly appreciated ... 'dumb it down' for me if you can, please
Older than most ... but PCLOS new!

Hi Pinoc,

I followed your instruction to type guest on username and password, then type startx on the next prompt and still giving me errors. Also,, I don't think my hardware has any nvidia cards installed though, but it was worth a try to type it. Is there any other process that I'm missing? Thanks

these are the messages showing:

Hi OldNewGuy,
Welcome to the gang. ;D (just clicked on smiley above) I am also an older than dirt user and some what new to PCLinuxOS.  I do like the Full Monty version myself.
While I am not a pro, I can give you my thoughts and I'm sure others will correct me, if I steer you wrong. 1> I have recently done a FM install using the vesa video mode and it did work.  I next did the updates and then did the video driver install. (my video card is too new, I have to manually add it.  You may not have that problem)  2>The boot loader used by PCLOS is the older (but very stable) grub 1.xx and some distros are using grub 2.xx now.  MS should not be a problem.  You might also try switching witch hard drive you boot from in your computers bios. (Not recommended though)  3> you should be good if you follow the instructions on page 6 of your FM live DVD.  /=root, swap & /home partitions.  I like to also have a large NTFS partition I call Data.  This allows saving & sharing files with MS.  Also, if you choose to store things like your music, documents, pictures, etc. on this Data drive, (or copies of them) you can get at them from other installs/upgrades.  Just make sure never to over write your NTFS Data partition.  Hope this helps.  Remember I am an armature too.
Good Luck, Dan ;D

Hi pcura,
please use the VESA boot option to start the live-session. Then install the system and do a full update via Synaptic. This will update graphic drivers etc to the latest versions since the release of FM. Then you can either just use the system with the VESA driver (which works for any graphic card) or try to configure your graphic card to use a different driver via PCC -> Hardware -> Configure Video Card. In the unlikely case that this does not work you can revert back to using the VESA driver by entering the command do-vesa in a root-terminal and reboot.
hope this helps,
-p.

Hi oldnewguy,

thanks for your interest in FM!  ;) To your questions:
1) the boot option VESA only implies to use the VESA graphic driver, once you are on the desktop you can install the system using the icon on desktop 6.
2) You can install PCLinuxOS to the larger empty drive. Towards the end of the installation the boot-loader will be written and it will detect any other OS-system so will automatically get a dual/triple/etc-boot system after installing PCLinuxOS.
3) wrt partitioning: 30GB for FM install, 2-4GB for swap, and the rest for data-sharing, either ext4, or if you want to share between MS and Linux then use NTFS as already outlined by ZX80

good luck!

Not sure what I did. Used synaptic to update and ended up with my FM which I have used a long time and been so happy with pretty much hosed. I tried to follow steps in forums but spiraled down to  :o. Just a word for the wise, be patient, backup before, and read the forums. I tend to fly to loose and now pay the price. Love FM though. Spend too much of my time saving other folks windoze versions and so I have had to do much worse than reload. Downloading new FM today. Looks like starting over and cleaning up. Thanks for the best distro ever! Well worth the reload.

Hi weldoc,
looks like you updated a FM originally from 2011.1? If so then please check these instructions to get your FM desktop back as before.
