This is day 2 of using FM. I love it!!! Thanks for all the hard work making this.

At the moment I just have one silly question ... if I drag an unwanted application to the trash bucket, is it totally removed or should I remove it through synaptic?

Cheers

Follow uncleV's advice about using Synaptic.

Always use Synaptic for installing and uninstalling apps and that way it will keep your system nice and "tidy".

Another useful thing to do is update fairly regularly - every few days or weekly - and your system will stay in much better shape than doing big updates every few months or so.

And glad you like FM so much - I'm sure pinoc will be very pleased.

Oh yes, that's very true, specially after this previous post of oldnewb. Glad you got it working but just for curiosity what was the problem before with the black screen?

I have no idea what happened before. In the end, I wiped the disk, started over, ditched the VM idea for now, and just have FM running on this machine. I used to teach photography ... I taught the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) ... and I am following my own advice (sad but true). I will stick to FM only for now, learn a bit about what I am doing (1 week with Linux now) and go from there.

There is so much content in this distro that I should be kept occupied for a very loooooooong time. I can't recall so many bits of software to play with in one place.

I still have that other os on my laptop, but I am quickly forgetting how to use it, and I haven't even turned it on for two days.

Again ... Many Kudos for a wonderful product ... and one I can afford!

Cheers

Just another very happy Full Monty user, wanting to say thanks for such a well thought out and solid distro!  I have been using Ubuntu for some time now, and still have a lot to learn on both KDE & PCLinuxOS subjects.  I have spent most of my time with Gnome in the past.  I now have FM on 3 desktops & 1 laptop of my own.  Also have installed FM on a friends laptop, and now he is converting his family over to FM too!
I am still a little unclear about FM updates.  I think I read PCLinuxOS is a rolling distro? (Updates come via synaptic?)
I know KDE 4.6 is coming for us soon, so how will that be done?  I think I read that upgrading to KDE 4.6 (when it becomes available) could mess up my current FM configuration?  So, I guess what I am asking is: Will we be able to upgrade or are we looking at a whole new install?
I figure the download time (of a whole new distro) will promote a way to upgrade? ???  Hope to find a how-to for this...
Anyway, I'm going do it.  I do really enjoy FM.

Just another view..
The description for FM, labels it to be intended for beginners.  While I agree, that it is great for beginners and MS Windows converts, I think that sort of implies you will soon grow out of it and to that (so far) I can only think of two reasons to grow out of it..  1: I might want to re-master it to my taste -or- 2: I needed grub2 or a 64 bit OS.  This is NOT my opinion, in fact, IMHO, I believe FM is done so well, you will not have time to learn all it has to offer, before the next version comes out?  Again, way to go folks & thanks for a truly complete and user friendly OS.

Hi A1977Corvette,

great to hear you like it and I hope your friends will be happy too! With respect to your questions:

user-level:
While FM should be beginner-friendly it also has many tools of interests to medium and advanced users. FM is designed to provide an overview of the many and diverse applications available in PCLinuxOS. Many more are available in Synaptic, including many other non-KDE desktop environments and the beauty is that all of this can be combined in whatever manner you like. Once you know what is of interest to you you could then build your own customised remaster using whatever desktop environment(s) of your choice. For example, FullMonty is a customised PCLinuxOS KDE4 installation.

updates:
PCLinuxOS is a rolling release and updates can be applied easily using Synaptic. The current FM-release 2011.01 can be updated normally without any problems. At present, I can not yet foresee the effects of upgrading the FM to KDE 4.6.1. Rest assured that I will test this and provide feedback as soon as the new KDE packages will be available.

have a nice day and fun with the FM  ;)

Nice to speak to the folks who build such a outstanding OS.  As far as the remaster part, I did try to backup my system, but a fresh FM root dir sows 12GB by it self, not counting any home dir.  I read you should not exceed 10GB for a remaster, so I have been backing it up with a drive copier, for now.  Yes, I  have been doing normal updates with sysnaptic.  Thanks for the heads up, about the future KDE.
Again, great job, Dan

Hi. I'm going round in circles trying to enable 5:1 sound through my CL Extreme card with PulseAudio. As i'm using the excellent FullMonty, i thought it best to ask here.

Mandriva by default enables PulseAudio and i can enable 5:1 sound selection through the PulseAudio Volume Control. In the FullMonty edition i have enabled 5:1 sound with PulseAudio and am using the snd-ca0106 driver (same as mandriva). I also installed the PulseAudio Volume Control which is not installed by default in PClos, but when i activate it, i get an error - Connection Failed: Connection Refused.

Obviously something is amiss, and i have no idea what, or why i get the error. I can get normal stereo output, and adding the extra channels with the mixer does nothing to produce 5:1 sound. Any help would be really appreciated.

Regards Saiyuki

Hi. I tried everything mentioned in that thread, and eventually installed anything that has the word pulse in it  ::) but still no 5:1 sound. Oh well, i'm sure something will click into place eventually.

Thanks for the reply

A word of caution: please wait with updating your FullMonty installation to KDE 4.6.1.
I will test the upgrade as soon as possible and then post back here if it is safe, there are issues, workarounds, etc.

need to do some other things today, so I don't know how much I can test today. Tomorrow I have more time and should be able to provide you updated info on any glitches, fixes, workarounds, etc. Please wait one more day.

FullMonty is a highly customized KDE4 desktop. Since the upgrade to KDE 4.6.1 will reset the KDE desktop your FullMonty layout will be messed up but still usable, you will have only 2 identical desktops showing the virtual desktop 1 of the FullMonty (Internet). To get back to the proper FullMonty-layout follow these steps:

Things to do after the upgrade to KDE 4.6.1:
=================================================

1) logout from your user-session and login to the root account
2) open Dolphin and navigate to the Home directory of your user account: /home/<your username>
3) in Dolphin, tick View -> Show Hidden Files
4) delete the directory .kde4 and rename the directory .kde4.bak  to  .kde4
5) in Dolphin, untick View -> Show Hidden Files
6) reset the settings for new users to be added to the system: open a konsole and enter
Code: [Select]
cd /etc
rm -fr skel
cp -afr skel_fm skel
7) logout from the root-session and login to your user-account
8 ) open Synaptic, search for and uninstall xine-browser-plugin

Note: Step 4 must be repeated for each user-account!

Thanks for using the FullMonty and any feedback/suggestions you may have!  ;)
have a nice day,
