Phew, I am glad I found this thread, pretty much right off BTW. After the last go at the instructions I couldn't get Synaptic to start. A re-boot seems to have cured it.
I am really liking the programs thus far. Just one question, is there any way to change the wall paper. TIA
Best,
Rob

My FM installation in a Sony VAIO, suddenly had a skype problem. I did some googling, and since I wanted to do an update anyway, I updated via Synaptic and afterwards uninstalled PulseAudio. After rebooting, now I cannot even get to the normal login screen any more. I get a white "Welcome to localhost.localdomain" panel where I log in with my user name, then my user password. When I enter, I get another popup saying that I am attempting to run "drak3d"  where I have to authenticate as "user" with my password again. Doing that I get another popup. Called 3d desktop effects.
I check no 3d desktop effects, click ok and get another panel telling me to reboot because I disabled Pulseaudio. Clicking OK gets me back to the welcome sign ...localhost etc etc
How get I out of this loop or better, what's wrong with my machine  -  it worked great until yesterday. Can anybody help?

Just a thought.
I had this "unexpected" behaviour when I changed (in LXDE) the display manager: PCC-->Boot-->Set up display manager from GDM to XDM (X display manager).

Thanks, unclV, there's just a small problem. I can't log in to get to PCC, not even as root.

at the grub menu add single to the command line, then when it has finished booting you can enter init 3 , then apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade and apt-get install kdm to install the KDM login screen. If you get there make sure that under Session you do not have drak3d selected but KDE

pinoc, I went through your recommendations, can now get to the normal login screen, but when I go to session type and check kde I see some quick lightning boot text lines, and the nvidia logo and it returns me to an empty login screen. Have tried it several times! After that kde is not checked any more.

go in the root command line and enter: do-vesa
then reboot and if all looks ok try to reconfigure the nvidia-driver via PCC
-p.

You can also use drakconf in terminal and change your videodriver to an innocent one and/or switch off 3D, translucent and accelerator settings or even choose a lower color depth.

What am I missing? I can't get at a console until I am logged in and it does not let me ::)! Tried to put do-vesa in the boot line but that didn't help.

at the grub menu, press F3 and then press the enter-key, then at the bottom of the screen at the end of the grub command line add ' single ' (without the quotes) and press the enter-key. When it has finished booting you are in a root shell where you enter do-vesa and press the enter-key. Next command is init 6 and then you boot normally into your account and see if it works or do a re-setup of the Nvidia-driver via PCC.
hope this works,
-p.

Sorry, pinoc but the same thing as in reply #50 happens. After log in command, things revert quickly to an empty log-in screen. I followed your instructions to a t, but don't really know what changes I would have to apply to video card. BTW - 3d effects are not supported by this computer anyways as I found in pcc in the root shell. Maybe this VAIO is a bit marginal to use FM anyway?

can you please specify:
Quote

Normally when you boot you will arrive at the KDM login-screen:

from where you can select a user, or specify a session type, etc. Forget about configuring the graphic card for now. When you have run the do-vesa command and then rebootet, do you get to the KDE login window or not?

or maybe you can try to setup a new user account and see if it works in there. From a root shell (you can use the grub single option) enter:
Code: [Select]
useradd -c "Joe Smith" joe
passwd joe
then add some password for the user joe, boot to the login-screen and try to login to the new account to see if that makes any difference.

Yes, exactly the same log-in panel except the orange wording above is missing.  I have used the new user once before on an old installation of FM and that got me missing desktops back.
I checked the KDE option in the session type before every log in but that check mark does not stick! I am a little pressed for time right now, but I will try the new user stratagem this afternoon.

Thanks for your patience,
ebvt

Hi ebvt,

or try this: at the grub command line enter a space and then the number 3. This will bring you to a command line login. There, enter you username <enter> and then your password <enter>
Then when you see your username at the command prompt enter: startx
and see what that does... Or try the same for the new user account to see if that makes any difference.
good luck,
-p.

Hi pinoc and thanks again. I tried all the given permutations, but to no avail. This is my experimental laptop and I just downloaded the latest PCLOS 2010.12, which I could install this weekend. Don't want to waste any more of your time. I learned a lot out of these sessions and copied the helpful fragments into  my tutorials.

PS My thanks to everybody else who chimed in!
