(Solved, maybe) FileZilla Server on Win XP, FileZilla Client on Gnome PCLinuxOS

Tried to post in the Gnome forum - put it only would save it as a draft.  Sorry but this many touch more than one GUI, so I thought I would add it here too.

I have a FileZilla Server setup on Windows XP and a client on both my Window's machine and my PCLinuxOS Gnome machine.  They share the same internet connection.  

I can ping from linux to the windows and all is fine.  

I can connect to the Win Server with a client on the Windows machine.  Ip discovered with ipconfig on win.

But cannot connect from the Linux machine.  Get a time out message, can't connect.

Both machines have the same user information (name/password) and permissions.

The Linux machine has a firewall, in setting it up, I uncheck the "No firewall" box, so nothing is checked.

I'm thinking I'm overlooking something very simple here, and hope someone else might have gone through the same problem.  Any advice would be most welcomed.

What happens if you set/tick the FTP Server entry?

The Gnome forum has a [Save] button which saves a draft.  What you want to use is the [Submit] button to post a reply.

I might be too new there, on the forum, as I don't have a [Submit] button when I edit the draft.

Tried that got the same:

     Error:   Connection timed out
     Error:   Could not connect to server

I should also note that I can connect to a test ftp on the internet, just cannot connect within my lan.

But, it was a good suggestion.

I misunderstood.  Sorry to sidetrack your thread with this.  It looks like you have to copy and paste your draft into a normal reply box and then submit it.

Don't even worry about, I didn't.  I believe it might be because I'm too new there (Gnome Forums) to start a new topic.

I have been using sftp with Filezilla for a long time to connect from Win7 to my PCLinuxOS boxes, but I had forgotten about the Filezilla Server for Windows. Reading your post gave me the impetus to take another look at it, and I like it... I got it working, too, after just a bit of twiddling.

I don't see anything that should keep yours from working since you can connect from outside. I did add an exception to the Windows Firewall for the Filezilla Server, but I'm not sure whether that helped or not.

My biggest problem was that I kept entering 192.168.1.3 in the Linux client when I was trying to connect because I was so certain that I had a static IP set up for that machine. Of course, any time I'm sure, I'm wrong - the addy had been changed to 192.168.1.4!

OK, kinda solved, I think, here's the news, my hub from AT&T is a  2wire 3800HGV-B.  That seems to be stopping me.  I had a software firewall, and found from that the signal never got to the computer.  Working with a friend in Japan, he set up a similar system with XP and Fedora.  He was able to log in to the Filezilla Server with no problem.  Between he and I we figured out that I had to change my hub firewall, did that, and I saw my software firewall allow the signal in.  He has a router between his hub and computers.  I don't.

So the general conclusion we came to was to insert a router to the hub, run the cables to from the computers to the hub.  And my setup would look like his setup.  Can't afford a router right now.  So, it's a project put aside.

Thought anyone following this might like an update.

I looked at this manual very briefly, and although I haven't really take the time to find it, it seems like it ought allow ftp since it allows multimedia, etc, and it has the functions of a router as well.

it still sounds like some config issue to me, either on the Win server or the Linux client.

How about the other way? Can you use Filezilla client on Windows to access ftp on a Linux server? I would at least give sftp a whirl since it requires almost no setup on either box - just make sure the sshd process is running on PCLinuxOS and choose sftp in the Filezilla client's Site Manager drop-down menu.

Thank you for your reply.  Yes I can connect to other ftp's from the Window side, so I go through the firewall.  And, in watching my firewall log I can see that the Linux machine sent a request in that was allowed.  So, I believe it's in Filezilla Server.

I'll take a look at sftp on Linux, almost sounds like there is one for windows too, will investigate. 

Funny the scribd link only allows me to see the first 3 pages.  But, I am leaning towards the server being the setup problem.  I just used their defaults during install.  Thanks again for your interest.
