<Solved>2010.12 new install
« on: January 26, 2011, 11:21:58 PM »
Hi to all,
I have just re-installed 2010.12 on my workstation and it is not working in a manner to which I am accustomed
On the first real boot, I had kde4 working. I then selected,in Synaptic, to read my last installation. I ran the updates and all seemed to be AOK.
However on reboot all I got was XXX XXX XXX at the top of the screen, which was white. no mouse at all that I could see.
I the dis a ctrl+backspce and selected a text screen.
I then did 'apt-get upgrade' which brought in a lot of kde stuff.
rebooted and login to an almost normal screen but no task bar.
On creating a task bar filled normally it appeared at the top of the screen.
Now some programs will not run--Firefox--, being one
The system has not displayed these things before and nothing has changed.
The system is:-- AMD 3core machine 4*500GB Sata drives in raid6 with a usb boot device. a Sata DVD + Nvidia video card.
Apart from a reinstall can anyone suggest what has gone wrong?

I suspect you did an update at an unfortunate time. Servers are in "mid" sync and some are down from what I understand. If you are aware of what is going on, and already know that this is not the problem then ignore "the dog". I was however able to do an update from

http://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu/linux/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/

If this isn't the problem, perhaps a bad burn to CD/DVD?  md5sum checks out and stuff?

Hi Rudge,
This disk has done a few installs with no problems.
But I have found that it is not possible to change raid 1-6 on the fly. At least it did not for me.
Fortunately I have the entire system backed up to a 1TB drive, so all my data and email is safe.
So --I am doing a re-install.
Bye the way I could not get a task bar even as root.
So perhaps the servers were the problem!!
Anyway I try again.
Many thanks for the quick return.

You should only use
Code: [Select]
apt-get dist-upgradewhen upgrade from the command line (not normally recommended, but in such a case as this, required... :().
