Nice !!  With that, is Thunar needed?  I don't think so.

Jeff

Hi,

We just need a good root password that the children won't guess... and not let them play with the Live CD either. :)

How about, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!! ;D

lol ! No, the password is "root", and when they install people will have to figure out what they want for an admin password, as usual.

I want to add an application to manage pictures : what do you think would be nice and not pull in too many depends ?

Else, I'll set it up with no login in the Live, so people who need to install will have to logout to login with the root credentials. Therefore I can write "user : root - password root" on the Grub background for the live, and make it be removed at first reboot after install, as for the other versions. What do you think ? Will that be ok ?

I was just kidding. :)

I'll try a few and get back to you.  I actually installed Gwenview on my Dell Inspiron 600m with OpenBox Bonsai, since I had plenty of hard drive space.  Yes, it's a KDE application and it brings in many depends, however, it runs fine.

Personally, I'd leave the leave it as usual.

Personally I find geeqie to be quite good.  I use it on my own OB.  Unfortunately Gwenview downloads over 35mb of dependencies.  The same issue applies to k3b, which is the best cd/dvd burn app I have tried - I did install that one to the hd though.

Hi,
To view pictures I installed viewnior. What I'm talking about is not an image viewer, but a program that manages pictures. I was thinking in fact about Shotwell, but I don't know them all picture managers, and I was wondering what other programs could be interesting in this regard : not too many depends and working well. When I got rid of Thunar and it's depends, I gained almost 20 MB, which I can use for a program we don't have yet in it. I know school masters and mistresses like to take lots of pictures with their classrooms when they bring the children out somewhere, so that could be useful in and edu version.

Shotwell runs fine.  It's not Picasa, however, it's fairly light on resources.  By the way, how about adding a clipboard manager, like Parcellite?

Jeff

Edit:  You might want to also consider a snapshot tool, like Scrennie.

Hi,
The depends for Screenie:
Quote
Depends: ImageMagick, gpicview, bash, zenity, xwd

ImageMagick, gpicview zenity and xwd are not installed in Edu. If I add shotwell I'm not sure that with all the depends for both screenie and Shotwell it will fit in.

Parcellite : I would have rather like gnote, if it will be packaged soon, but there too I'm not sure all fits in less than 700 MB, for both English and French versions.

Why do you think Parcellite is interesting ? I don't mind but don't quite know how that is really meant to be used ?

What did you mean about Picasa ? Would you have advised to install Picasa preferably to Shotwell ? I didn't quite think about an external hosting for schools pictures, in fact...

Hi Mélodie,

These were just suggestions, if you had the room.  Scrennie, while heavy on the depends, works well.  If there is another snapshot utility, low on depends, I would like to try it.

As for Parcellite, I use a clipboard daily on all my machines, some people don't use it at all.  I just happen to use Parcellite on my OpenBox installs, as it works fine as a clipboard.

Concerning Picasa, In Linux I use several of the tools for photo editing, etc.  However, it's a very large program.  Shotwell, while more limited, is a much smaller install.

Hi,

When I talk about adding a program to manage albums I see how useful it could be for a school teacher who take their class outside and organize spectacles played by the children. For parcellite, even it that doesn't take much space, and for a program that takes screen shots, I don't see what use they can do of it ? Here in France their school program is already much too heavy and they can't fill it all : they also have programs for teaching computing, but first, they don't know anything serious about computing themselves, two they mostly don't have the computers for that (1 for 22 children in the US equivalent of 11th grade here in my son's classroom :/ ).

If you people from the US think theses programs could be very useful for the kids at your places, don't hesitate to tell me that at your places it's of great interest : I can understand that all countries don't do the things the same way !

For Parcellite I was just thinking I might learn something : for my use it's just a place I need to clean because it keeps plenty stuff I copy/paste here and there : else what can one do with it ?

+1 for Parcellite, I don't use it often, but it's real handy at times.

For screenshots I have gnome-screenshot which is part of the utilities package, probably wouldn't work for you, but there is also Shutter in the repo, which is a gnome app I believe, haven't tried it, but here's the link: http://shutter-project.org/

And here's the list of dependencies:

libgtk2-perl
libgtk2-imageview-perl
libglib-perl
libgnome2-perl
libgnome2-vfs-perl
libgnome2-wnck-perl
libgnome2-gconf-perl
liblocale-gettext-perl
libxml-simple-perl
libwww-mechanize-perl
libwww-perl
libnet-dbus-perl
imagemagick
perlmagick
libx11-protocol-perl
librsvg2-common
libgtk2-trayicon-perl (only if you are using a gtk2 version lower than 2.10.x)
xdg-utils
procps
librsvg
libproc-processtable-perl (NEW! – since 0.86.2)
libgtk2-unique-perl (NEW! – since 0.87)

Well, I'm still waiting for someone explaining me what to do with it and how ? I really have no idea !

I install them in my main machine and will see how that works and how much more it brings in. Thanks for the idea.

Hi Jeff !

I'm waiting for Timeth and Ruel24 to make the theme appear... :P

Oops ! Shutter with depends almost 20 MB. gnome-screenshot is not a package... I just discovered "wink", which is not free, but seems interesting... I install it and will see what I can use it for, and if nice and not too difficult will add it.

See you soon !

PS: should I install oneko ? :D

Last for today... hum, for this night.

For the screenshots I think our candidate will be MTPaint ! Very light, easy to use, and has translations. (Here screenie stays desperately in English, and I wouldn't install 19.60 MB, with Shutter, just to get a frontend to scrot !? )

Let's have MTPaint with his buddy MTPaint Screenshot  !! :)
