Hi Mélodie,

I'm still having acpi problems with this new machine and will be switching RC6 over to my Dell E1705 for further testing.  I'll get back to you later if I discover any new bugs during testing.  By the way, no problem not including the ATI drivers, as I can always install them later.

Hi Jeff, is the acpi problem related only to your machine or do you think the distro in causing it ? And what kind of problem : can you solve it with an option on the kernel boot line ?

It's related only to my machine, an Alienware M17x R2.  Unfortunately, most Linux distro's will not run properly on it, at this time.  At a matter of fact, other than PCLinuxOS, I have yet to find another distro that will even boot and I've tried several.  Disabling acpi works at boot, however, there is no battery monitoring, etc.

Jeff

Edit:  By the way, I'm running RC6 on another machine and it's working fine.

Nice machine...

There is a new bios for it, since 2011 january. Don't know if that could help ?

Quote
1. Modify EC code to get PSID delay 1 second.
2. Modify the bad battery stop charge reason ID code for debug.

Thanks, I know about the new bios, however, not until Dell tells me to upgrade or until the warranty expires.  So far, under Windows 7, all is well.  I can even run virtualbox without a problem, including RC6, witch I'm running now.

Edit:  I am seeing a small problem with Thunar.  When right clicking on anything to open an options box, the box will close whenever the mouse button is released.  Normally it stays open when the button is released.  It works fine in pcmanfm and everywhere else.

Something I have been meaning to ask about.  In Thunar, on an item in a folder I need to hold the right-click down to be able to use the menu.  Everywhere else is fine, even in empty space in a folder.  Occasionally a really fast right-click will stay open, but that's a rarity.

Has anyone come across this or should I start a new thread?

Hi,

If I change theses 2 lines in /etc/PolicyKit/PolyciKit.conf:
Code: [Select]
<match action="org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed">
<return result="yes"/>
</match>
<match action="hal-storage-mount-fixed-extra-options">
<return result="yes" />
</match>

from "yes", to "no", the partitions are still seen in pcmanfm (and nautilus as well, I checked) but not possible to mount them by clicking on it anymore.

This is good, but for the Edu it would still be better if it is possible for an admin who would be logged in to mount and access if needed. This is my last thought about the subject : would you agree ?

If you are ok with this statement, could you try to help me figure out how to write the syntax for it ? I seem not to be able to figure it out by reading at the doc:
http://hal.freedesktop.org/docs/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf.5.html

I see:
Quote
no Access denied.

auth_self Access denied, but authentication of the caller as himself will grant access to only that caller.

auth_self_keep_session

Access denied, but authentication of the caller as himself will grant access to any caller in the session of the caller belongs to.

auth_self_keep_always Access denied, but authentication of the caller as himself will grant access any caller with the given uid in the future.

auth_admin Access denied, but authentication of the caller as an administrative user will grant access to only that caller.

auth_admin_keep_session Access denied, but authentication of the caller as an administrative user will grant access to any caller in the session of the caller belongs to.

auth_admin_keep_always Access denied, but authentication of the caller as an administrative user will grant access any caller with the given uid in the future.

yes Access granted.

For now, "yes" or "no" is easy : <return result="yes"/> or <return result="no"/>

But if for instance I want to use "auth_admin", or "auth_admin_keep_session", how should it be written ?

I see  examples:
Code: [Select]
<match user="davidz|bateman">
  <return result="yes"/>
</match>

Do you think it would be something such as
Code: [Select]
<match action="org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed">
<match user="auth_admin">
<return result="yes"/>
</match>

?

That seems strange to me...

Thanks,
Mélodie

Hi, the right method has been given to me. This is:
Code: [Select]
<match action="org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed">
<return result="auth_admin"/>
</match>

Now you can click on a non mounted partition from within pcmanfm and it prompts a window for the root password. That is much more clean !

What about removing Thunar and it's depends ? :)

Good evening to all,
Mélodie //happy for having a clean solution...

Nice !!  With that, is Thunar needed?  I don't think so.

Hi,

We just need a good root password that the children won't guess... and not let them play with the Live CD either. :)
